Culver Beer Fest given tentative O.K. by council

Monnier discusses remarkable growth, impact, and community support of CBGC

January 15, 2013

Culver area youngsters spent a combined total of some 58,000 hours at the Culver Boys & Girls Club as of mid-December, 2012, according to unit director Cory Monnier -- and that's just one figure among many which he told Culver Kiwanians adds up to some "exciting trends" at the club.

Addressing Culver's Kiwanis Club last month at the Culver Public Library, Monnier said he'd initially been hesitant to take the lead position at Culver's Boys & Girls Club, since he knew first-hand the challenges of raising funds for such a club even at his previous post in Valparaiso, a community of 30,000.

Davis recalls first day on the job at Culver -- 77 years ago -- and life on campus, in town, and on the farm

January 11, 2013

Elisabeth may hold a completely unique place in the history of Culver -- both the town and the Academies, where she'll likely head to work today just as she did on March 15, 1936, nearly 77 years ago. Even discounting the seven years she spent home, raising her young children, that still makes 70 years of employment at the same Culver institution. And she's still at it.

January 4, 2013

Culver street crews will do their best, it was concluded at the most recent meeting of Culver's town council, but sometimes you just can't fight Mother Nature.

Discussion took place at the Dec. 27 meeting of the council after Susie Mahler, owner of Cafe Max on Main Street, raised concerns as to six-foot stretches of ice on the street between "bump-out" planters installed this fall as part of Culver's downtown revitalization program.

A look back at the best, worst, and everything in between from 2012 in Culver.

Culver bid farewell not only to outgoing clerk treasurer Casey Howard, but retiring deputy clerk Kay Davis, who served 30 continuous years in the position. Edna Mae Craft, long an assistant in the clerk's office, also bid her position farewell.

Culver Christmas traditions through the years

December 24, 2012

Typical Christmas reports in the late 19th century pages of the Citizen focused on visits of residents to family members' homes for Christmas, as well as elaborate Christmas productions or services at one of Culver's churches, most commonly Grace Reformed (today Grace United Church of Christ) or the Methodist Episcopal Church on Main and Washington Streets.

By 1930, Culver had a "community Christmas tree," annually erected on the corner of Main and Jefferson Streets.
