Culver lab develops nationally impactful meth inhibiting drug

January 25, 2013

It's a story that's been picked up by national media outlets like BusinessWeek and Forbes, about a product with the potential to make a real impact in a drug abuse epidemic which has especially plagued rural America -- including the Marshall County area -- in recent years. And it was developed in Culver, Indiana.

Many here drive by the Acura Pharmaceuticals plant regularly -- even daily -- without paying the nondescript property much heed. Many more may not be aware it no longer operates under the Houba moniker (see article this issue).

If these walls could talk: the Jefferson Street ice house

January 23, 2013

It's been several weeks since the last entry in our series of "virtual" visits to various buildings in Culver, though we're still in the general downtown area. We've traveled east on Jefferson Street to its end at the shore of Lake Maxinkuckee (not bothering, though, to cross the railroad tracks just west of the shoreline) and now we're just about done with the street entirely.

If you headed to today's location nowadays, you'd be standing on Culver Cove property; but for several decades in the early 20th century, its most notable use was as part of the Medbourn ice house.

Community invited to help prepare 20,000 meals for the hungry

January 18, 2013

This Saturday, several students from Culver Academies will be packaging no less than 20,000 meals for the hungry around the world, and they hope members of the community at large will join them.

They call themselves the Culver Hunger Fighters, and Saturday's "packaging party," if you will, is the culmination of a host of events at the school and beyond, all of which is the culmination of some remarkable experiences for the students.

Culver Beer Fest given tentative O.K. by council

January 18, 2013

Culver's town council last week greenlighted a new beer festival in Culver, pending approval from the park board, after lengthy discussion from council members and the audience.

The council, which was technically reorganized but retained Sally Ricciardi as president and Ginny Munroe as vice president,
Tammy Pesek, of the Evil Czech Brewery in Culver, who was accompanied by husband George and brewery general manager Shawn Erikson, said the notion for the festival began last September, when Culver's wine festival took place.

Monnier discusses remarkable growth, impact, and community support of CBGC

January 15, 2013

Culver area youngsters spent a combined total of some 58,000 hours at the Culver Boys & Girls Club as of mid-December, 2012, according to unit director Cory Monnier -- and that's just one figure among many which he told Culver Kiwanians adds up to some "exciting trends" at the club.

Addressing Culver's Kiwanis Club last month at the Culver Public Library, Monnier said he'd initially been hesitant to take the lead position at Culver's Boys & Girls Club, since he knew first-hand the challenges of raising funds for such a club even at his previous post in Valparaiso, a community of 30,000.

Davis recalls first day on the job at Culver -- 77 years ago -- and life on campus, in town, and on the farm

January 11, 2013

Elisabeth may hold a completely unique place in the history of Culver -- both the town and the Academies, where she'll likely head to work today just as she did on March 15, 1936, nearly 77 years ago. Even discounting the seven years she spent home, raising her young children, that still makes 70 years of employment at the same Culver institution. And she's still at it.

Former Culverite once again on NY Times bestseller list

January 5, 2013

Culver native and author Mark Schlabach has become even more of a household name after the release of two high-profile books -- one on the New York Times bestsellers list -- this fall.

Council tackles downtown snow woes, end of year business

January 4, 2013

Culver street crews will do their best, it was concluded at the most recent meeting of Culver's town council, but sometimes you just can't fight Mother Nature.

Discussion took place at the Dec. 27 meeting of the council after Susie Mahler, owner of Cafe Max on Main Street, raised concerns as to six-foot stretches of ice on the street between "bump-out" planters installed this fall as part of Culver's downtown revitalization program.
