CVS drive-through, renovations expected by end of this year

February 24, 2014

Culver's CVS Pharmacy has maintained basically the same appearance since its 1974 construction as Hook's Drugs, but the wheels are in motion for a dramatic change, both inside and outside, as well as the addition of drive-through pharmacy service, by the end of 2014.

John Fulkerson of the Wheatfield, Indiana-based Hamstra Group, which will handle contracting on the project for the CVS corporation, sat down with members of Culver's town council Wednesday, Jan. 12, to answer council members' questions as to specifics of the work.

Culver Miller’s lauded for 30-plus years of service to Meals on Wheels

February 15, 2014

For over 30 years, Culver's Meals on Wheels program has been delivering hot meals to seniors and shut-ins across the area, and for over 30 years, Miller's Merry Manor nursing home facility has prepared those meals in its kitchen. That's a fact the Culver Council of Churches -- which has long been a local intermediary for the endeavor -- wanted to acknowledge by way of a "thank you" plaque recognizing Miller's, which was given recently at the facility.

Culver schools to discuss balanced calendar option

February 11, 2014

MARSHALL COUNTY Culver is among Marshall County schools (others include Argos, Plymouth, and Triton) considering switching to a balanced calendar for the 2015-2016 school year, along with other area schools John Glenn, Knox, North Judson, and Oregon-Davis.

A presentation on the subject will be given at a special meeting Weds., March 12 at Culver Comm. High School, at 7 p.m.
School officials stress, “A balanced calendar is not the same as a year-round schedule.”

Council plans ‘town hall’ style meeting to discuss park future

February 10, 2014

Culver's town council voted to hold a 'town hall' style meeting regarding the Culver park and its future, at the council's Jan. 28 meeting.

The 'town hall' style meeting, which had been discussed at previous council meetings, will take place Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at the train station - depot on Lake Shore Drive. It was proposed at the latest council meeting by president Ginny Munroe, who raised the issue as the council discussed its ordinance to add a new member to the park board, an ordinance not finalized as yet (it was approved only on the first two readings).

Zeglises, BIRD group honored at annual Lions banquet

February 6, 2014

The crowd may not have been up to its usual size for what traditionally is one of the best-attended events held each year by Culver’s Lions Club, but a determined group braved the cold and snow last Wednesday evening for the club’s annual community awards banquet.
Feted as Citizens of the Year were John and Carol Zeglis of Culver, with the Culver-launched BIRD (“Building, Inspiring, Recreating, and Discovering”) named Organization of the Year.

If these walls could talk: 624 Lake Shore Drive

February 2, 2014

CULVER HISTORY CORNER

---------------------------

Picking up where we left off in the last installment of our ongoing series of "virtual" strolls through the history of notable buildings in Culver, we're dropping in to visit Larry at today's Brockey Insurance Building at 624 E. Lake Shore Drive, across from the town park.

Our Culver ancestors would have known the entire block, however, as the Hayes Block, which included what is today 624 Lake Shore Dr. and what was 642 Lake Shore Drive.

Park-related matters continue to be hot topic at town council mtg

February 2, 2014

Members of Culver's town council and the audience at the Jan. 14 meeting debated questions of whether to add a seventh member to Culver's park board, as well as whether to hold a "town hall" style meeting to discuss the future of the park.

The reorganized council -- which shifted its presidency to Ginny Munroe and vice presidency to Bill Githens -- opted to table the matter of an additional park board member, something about which they had created an ordinance and even voted on first reading, though finalization still awaits a second and third reading.

Ice sculptures to be part of Feb. 14 wkd ice fishing, winter event in Culver

January 29, 2014

It appears likely the weather will cooperate in facilitating enough ice for a second annual North American Ice Fishing Conference national tournament on Lake Maxinkuckee (since the first year's attempt in 2012 was a no-go due to lack of ice), the weekend of Feb. 14 through 16.

One difference this year is the addition of at least the first iteration of a previously hoped-for winter carnival, according to Tony Sellers of the Culver Chamber of Commerce.

It's been a little over 80 years, but Culver will soon have its own radio station once again, in the form of Max 98.3, which will also mark the return of FM radio to Marshall County, whose present radio offerings are limited to AM frequencies.
