If these walls could talk: Culver's Main Street (part 1 of a series)

February 8, 2011

We begin a new series of regular (sometimes weekly -- sometimes unavoidably delayed due to space limitations) journeys through Culver’s past as we look at the lives of historic buildings in the Culver area: how far back they go, what (or whom) they’ve housed through the years, and what they are today.
For the first several weeks, we’ll take a stroll down Main Street in downtown Culver, starting at the north end and making our way south down the east side.

Donors' gifts enrich lives at Culver Millers

February 3, 2011

When beloved, life-long Culver businessman and community servant Bill Snyder died last year, his family knew they wanted to do something to thank the staff and administration at Miller's Merry manor nursing home in Culver not only for all they did for Snyder, but for all they do in general. Recently that appreciation manifested itself tangibly in a large, brand-new, flat-screen television for use in Millers' dining room, something which will benefit all residents as well as staff.

The much-talked-about blizzard of 2011 hit Marshall County around 3:30 this afternoon, bringing blowing and drifting snow and frigid temperatures.

The town of Culver has declared a snow emergency, and requests vehicles be moved from main streets to avoid possible towing. The Plymouth mayor’s office, meanwhile, has set up an Incident Command Center for the time being at the Plymouth Fire Department.

Culver Clem's Groundhog Day declaration

February 1, 2011

CULVER -- Due to the sad demise of Culver Chuck, whose career was calamitously concluded last year, Punxsutawney Phil, plenipotentiary of prognostication for predicting winter's end, has pronounced that Culver Clem will serve on a probationary period for our area.
Culver Clem has candidly cautioned that his career curve doesn't coincide with Chuck's but will call with caution his conclusions for this year.
Explaining that Daylight Savings Time has drastically dulled and disrupted his disposition, he duly noted that he would retreat to his den for six more weeks.

Anyone who’s watched “Zorro,†“Pirates of the Caribbean,†even “Star Wars,†or other films showcasing swashbuckling swordplay can appreciate Rebecca Schneider’s initial interest in the sport of fencing. And now, as part of her passion for bringing the sport to the Marshall County community, they can also try their hand at a few moves...or possibly embark on a lifelong love of fencing as Schneider herself wound up (inadvertently doing), starting in the early 1990s.

January 25, 2011

"Dancing" today may evoke images ranging from celebrities on television competitions to little more than flapping arms and legs in place, but time was when dances at Culver were affaris to be remembered, and social events to which young ladies from Indianapolis to South Bend dreamed of being invited.
