Lancers rout Culver in NSC opener

LAKEVILLE — While LaVille may not have started off quite as fast as it would’ve liked, once the Lancers got rolling, they dominated.
A veteran Lancers squad opened its Northern State Conference schedule with a win Monday as it handed visiting Culver a 9-3 defeat at Newton Park.

Culver’s McBee on 1st IUSB volleyball team

SOUTH BEND — Culver Community freshman opposite hitter Patrice McBee will be in the lineup as the first-ever Indiana University South Bend varsity volleyball team hits the court for its opener against Purdue Calumet on Thursday.
Despite beginning the season with ten new players, head coach Jamie Ashmore doesn’t feel that her team has any excuses once it steps on the court. “They’ve worked very hard to come together as a team,” she said. “This is a talented bunch.”
“I know that we will be ready the morning of that first match. We will be prepared.”

Nas-wau-kee Indian marker in Culver still needs funds

Donations are still needed to fund the metal plaque to attach to the boulder for the Chief Nas-wau-kee historical marker at Lake Maxinkuckee. The dedication will be September 16 at 5 p.m. The boulder was placed and landscaped by Boy Scout Bryan McKinney for his Eagle award.
The plaque will be 20x24 inches and cost $750. To donate to help pay for the Nas-wau-kee plaque, please send check to Potawatomi Trail of Death Assn., Fulton Co. Hist. Soc, 37 E 375 N, Rochester IN 46975. FCHS is a not-for-profit 501( c ) 3 corporation so donations are tax deductible.

Academies students, faculty take local-penned play to international festival in Scotland

A group of Culver Academies students and faculty will spend 10 days in Edinburgh, Scotland this month as part of a prestigious invitation from the American High School Theatre Festival to The Fringe, the world’s largest performing arts festival.
According to Culver’s theatre director, Richard Coven, Culver will be one of just 15 high schools representing North America (including two Canadian and one Mexican school) at the festival, which will host some 2,500 different shows over three weeks in August. The trip will be Culver’s second invitation to the event, the first being in 2005.

CCHS auditorium is renovated, ready for Maxinkuckee Players

When the Maxinkuckee Players hit the stage at Culver Community High School’s auditorium this weekend, it will be to a freshly-renovated space following a summer of work which also included repainting the high school hallways and other areas to brighten and lighten the space.
Among changes in the auditorium were replacing the original 742 seats placed in 1968 with ergonomically correct seating of approximately 720. Among other changes were lighting improvements, carpet replacement, and general cleaning of the railings. Tiles were also checked for asbestos.

Wind turbine meeting draws hundreds

Between 300 and 400 people filled the Culver Elementary School gymnasium Saturday morning for what was billed as an informational meeting sponsored by Concerned Property Owners of Southern Marshall County, Indiana. The topic of the day has become a hot one in recent weeks and months in the area: the proposed placement of more than 60 400-plus foot wind turbines across several thousand acres in parts of Marshall and Fulton Counties by Florida based energy company Nextera.

Culver schools prepare for iPads in every student’s hands

By the time most readers hold this, the August 18 edition of this newspaper in their hands, most all of Culver Community’s middle and high school students will have held their brand new iPad personal digital devices in their hands, something about which school officials held a series of meetings about with parents and students the previous week.

History of Culver's ice houses August 27

The strange but fascinating history of the area “frozen water trade” will be told in word and pictures when the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver presents a program on the history of Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee’s ice houses. The program, presented by Jeff Kenney of the Society, will take place Saturday, August 27, at 10 a.m. at the depot-train station adjacent to Culver’s town park on Lake Shore Drive.
