Turnovers lead Cavaliers past Trojans

CULVER — The Culver Cavaliers exacted revenge on West Central for an earlier season defeat in typical, grind-it-out fashion Friday night.
After West Central went up early with a 23-yard touchdown run at the 8:37 stop of the first quarter, the Cavs responded with two scores of their own from Kevin Hogan — a 3- and 2-yard run — to take a 14-8 lead and never looked back in a 24-14 win over the Trojans in a Sectional 33 semifinal at Culver.

For over 150 years, there has been a historic Culver ghost story all its own which has been published in numerous books of ghost tales of Indiana and the Midwest.

Jessye Gilley doesn’t really believe in ghosts.

“It wasn’t uncommon to hear odd noises when it’s slow here,” says Gilley, administrative director for the past four years at the Culver Cove. “You just attribute it to the building; you know, being on the lake, the building settling.”

Culver Scarecrow contest winners

Culver's "walking ladies" group alongside their winning entry, "Crowing about Culver," in the Culver Chamber of Commerce's Scarecrow Contest. According to Rosalie Bonine, of the walking group, the winners were given "a lovely gift basket containing a $50 prize, two gas gift certificates, (and) many other items donated by the Culver merchants." Marian Reinhold chairs the event, which was judged by a panel.

VFW Halloween costume party
Culver’s VFW Post 6919 will host a Halloween costume party Friday, Oct. 28, starting at 8 p.m., following the Ladies Auxiliary dinner.
The event is for adults, and anyone attending in costume will be given a token for a free beverage of their choice. There will be cash prizes for the top three costumes. The Post is located at 108 E. Washington

The Culver community is once again rallying around one of its own, and once again it's thanks in part to one of the community's young people. This time, however, the student in question -- 6th grader Reilly Reinhold of Culver -- has a special connection to her project: she's raising money for the ALS Association (alsa.org), to fight the disease which has rapidly altered the life of her father, Culver Community High School graduate Rob Reinhold.

New museum director hopes to involve all ages in Culver history

Tour showcases Culver to statewide group

More than 50 participants from around Indiana took part in a recent tour, sponsored by the Indiana Humanities Council, of several successful Hoosier communities to examine their culture, arts, and redevelopment successes. Among them was Culver, where Citizen editor Jeff Kenney led a bus tour around Lake Maxinkuckee and the town, concluding with a presentation at the town park by Chamber of Commerce president Dawn Brockey, right, and town council member Ralph Winters, center. To his right is tour leader Paul Munoz of Hamilton County.

Culver Halloween history exhibit
The Center for Culver History, the museum and research center of the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver, is hosting an exhibit on Halloween in Culver’s past. The exhibit will run into mid-November. Examined will be community events, private parties, and varieties of costumes and pranks. Photos, cartoons, and other memorabilia help tell the story. The museum is free and open to the public.

Stevens, Hogan lead Cavs

Quarterback Collin Stevens did a little bit of everything and running back Kevin Hogan scored three times to lead Culver to a 44-6 Class A Sectional 33 win at Tri-County Friday.
Stevens started a 23-point second quarter with a 25-yard scoring run. He added a 1-yard touchdown pass to Sam Hissong in the same stanza and booted a 30-yard field goal right before the half. For the game, Stevens connected on 9-of-10 pass attempts for 179 yards.
Hogan, who finished with 117 rushing yards on 25 carries, added scoring
runs of 24, 14, and 9 yards.
