Maxinkuckee Environmental Council, Fund announce opposition to wind farm project

The Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Council (LMEC) and the Lake Maxinkuckee Enironmental Fund (LMEF) released a statement last week formally announcing they do not endorse a wind farm project proposed by Florida energy company NextEra. The statement notes the organizations “would like to clarify and comment upon statements made in NextEra Energy Resource’s paid advertisement in the Culver Citizen on August 11.”

Labor Day weekend carillon recital at Culver

John Gouwens, Carillonneur of the Culver Academies, will present a recital Saturday, September 3, at 4 p.m. Eastern time, on the outstanding 51-bell Gillett and Johnston carillon in the tower of the Memorial Chapel, Culver Academies. This is one of two programs to be presented during the fall term, the other one falling on October 1 (also 4 p.m.).

Culver town-wide yard sale Sept. 23-24

The town of Culver will sponsor a fall town-wide yard sale Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those interested in participating should contact the town hall between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 574-842-3140 beginning Monday, Sept. 5 through Wednesday, Sept. 21. Please provide your address and the date(s) of your sale. There is no cost for the event. A map of the locations hosting a yard sale will be disbursed by 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 at the town hall, Culver Express, Osborn’s Mini-Mart and www.townofculver.org.

West Point selects Culver Military Academy graduate as Cadet First Captain

WEST POINT, N.Y. — A 2008 graduate of Culver Military Academy has been chosen by U.S. Military Academy to serve as the First Captain for the 2011-12 academic year.
Charlie Phelps (Woodinville, Wash.) was named to the Academy’s highest cadet position Aug. 8. Phelps, who will also be known as the brigade commander, officially began his duties at West Point Aug. 14.
Phelps, a military history major, is responsible for the overall performance of the approximately 4,400-member Corps of Cadets.

Emergency services charity softball game will honor Sept. 11 service

On Sunday, September 11, the Culver Police, Fire Department, and EMS will once again hold a charity softball game to benefit the Culver Food Pantry. They will be teaming up and facing off, with the first pitch thrown at 11:30 a.m. EST. The event will be held at the Culver High School softball field. Admission to this event is just food donations, non-perishable, to be given to the local food pantry.

Turnovers doom CMA against NorthWood

NAPPANEE — According to the statistics, CMA should have won the game against the NorthWood Panthers Friday night, as the Eagles outgained NorthWood 295 yards to 229 and had 15 first downs to the Panthers’ nine, but five CMA turnovers were the difference as the Panthers downed CMA 27-18 at Andrews Field in Nappanee.

L’Max film fest fourth outing is new and improved

The fourth annual Lake Maxinkuckee Film Festival, “A Gift of Warmth,” will feature a grand assortment of “fabulous ‘50s” films, kicking off with a gala sponsors’ evening Friday, September 2. As mentioned in last week’s edition of this newspaper, this year’s sponsor’s evening will have a “twist”: six film shorts created and produced by students in Purdue University’s Film and Video Studies department. Each short, says festival committee chairman Gary Shaffer, is five to eight minutes long, and students act in, direct, and produced the films.

Lady Cavs win opener
Culver opened its volleyball season with a three-game victory at Caston Thursday, 25-17, 25-20, 25-17.
Aspen Kitchell stuffed the stat sheet with five kills, three aces and four assists, while Samantha Howard dealt three aces with three assists and six digs, and Alex Baker put down four kills with three aces.

Culver’s Karen Heim was voted Republican party nominee for town clerk in this November’s election, at the town’s Republican caucus last Thursday.
Following an introduction by Marshall County Republican Chairman Dave Holmes, both Heim and opponent Jeanette Surrisi were given time for brief, pre-vote statements to the audience, which filled the large meeting room of the Culver-Union Township Public Library, where the caucus was held.
