Harper shares story of local African American community

February 28, 2011

As has been documented in recent years, Culver was once home to a thriving African American community which included members of the first integrated high school basketball team in Indiana (in 1922), an African Methodist Episcopal Church, and many more notable features. Of that community, Jim Harper remains to tell the story, which is what he did last week at two events at the Culver-Union Township Public Library -- one aimed at teens (last Thursday) and one at adults (on Saturday), in honor of Black History Month.

Culver ends regular season with road win

February 28, 2011

BREMEN — With Indiana’s version of March Madness mere days away, Culver capped the regular season on a high note Friday night.
After a tremendous start, Culver never looked back and topped Bremen, 54-39.
“We got them earlier in the year at the Bi-County Tournament but we knew this was going to be a dogfight, and we had some kids step up for us,” Culver coach Kyle Elliott said. “I’m very proud of the kids’ effort.”
As it has much of the season, Bremen dug itself an early hole, and couldn’t cut its deficit to less than 12 points over the final two quarters.

February 23, 2011

The term, “pay it forward” has been in vogue in recent years, especially following the release of the popular 2000 movie of the same name, though many may not realize that, like many films, “Pay it Forward” was based on a book (in this case by Catherine Ryan Hyde).

If these walls could talk: Main Street (Part 2 of a series)

February 23, 2011

We continue our series of regular (sometimes weekly -- sometimes unavoidably delayed due to space limitations) journeys through Culver’s past as we look at the lives of historic buildings in the Culver area: how far back they go, what (or whom) they’ve housed through the years, and what they are today. For the first several weeks, we’ll take a stroll down Main Street in downtown Culver, starting at the north end and making our way south down the east side.
