Eagles gelling on state run

March 23, 2011

CULVER — Culver Military players huddled around their coach Monday at Fleet Gymnasium, going over the lessons of the day.
They concluded their practice, as they always do, with their team motto: “Together we work! Together we work! Together we win!”
It’s that togetherness, that team chemistry, players and coaches say, that is responsible for the Eagles’ impressive run to state this season.
CMA (19-6) will play No. 1-ranked and reigning 3A state champion Washington (23-4) at the Class 3A finals at Conseco Fieldhouse Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.

Culver Chamber gears up for a busy year

March 23, 2011

With the month of April -- and hence the seasons of spring and summer -- just over the horizon, Culver’s economic year is, in many ways, just about to get started. With that in mind, members and leaders of Culver’s Chamber of Commerce are gearing up for another busy year themselves, says Chamber President Dawn Brockey and Vice President Tony Sellers.

Hotel Culver planned for this summer

March 22, 2011

Culver should see a much-needed addition to its overnight accommodation offerings this summer, with Hotel Culver, located at 18571 State Road 10 (just west of the intersection of State Roads 10 and 17), underway.
This according to John Zehner, who has been involved in several Culver area businesses in recent years.
The five-room hotel will precede a second, 16-room venture located in two buildings on the same property: those formerly occupied by the 10 Spot and a motorcycle shop.

If these walls could talk: 106 - 102 N. Main Street

March 21, 2011

We continue our series of semi-regular journeys through Culver’s past as we look at the lives of historic buildings in the Culver area. For now, we're strolling down Main Street's east side in down¬town Cul¬ver, making our way south.
This time, we're nearing the northeast corner of Main and Jefferson Streets, where today's vacant lot fails to convey the memories of generations of Culverites and others who enjoyed the many entities once occupying the space, which included some extremely popular spots.

CMA wins first-ever semistate title

March 21, 2011

HUNTINGTON — The Eagles recovered from a tough start that included six first-quarter turnovers to take a slim 35-34 lead into the final period and hold on for the eventual 51-49 win over Columbia City at the Class 3A Huntington North Semistate Saturday.
Juwan Brescacin's two-handed slam dunk off a Hayes Barnes pass in transition with under three seconds on the game clock put the exclamation point on Culver Military Academy's first semistate championship.

Students and faculty involved in Culver Community High School’s Business Professionals of America have not only carried on a remarkable tradition of excellence by virtue of their success at a recent state-level competition, they’re also carrying on the legacy of the recently-deceased, well-loved Culver teacher who helped build the program to what it is, Mike Schwartz.
Twenty-two CCHS students competed in Indianapolis February 27 through March 1 at BPA’s annual state competition.

CMA preps for Eagles vs. Eagles matchup at semistate

March 17, 2011

CULVER — Columbia City may not look like the biggest, most athletic team on the block, but Culver Military coach Mark Galloway knows appearances can be deceiving.
As a former Carmel coach, the first-year CMA skipper has squared off against Columbia City coach Chris Benedict before during summer league play, and he knows Benedict’s team will be ready as the two teams battle in an Eagles vs. Eagles match-up at the Class 3A at Huntington North basketball semistate at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.
