May 28, 2014

Culver's parks and recreation board welcomed newest member Christi Scarborogh at its May 12 meeting, the culmination of several months of discussion and effort to amend local legislation to allow Culver's school board to appoint a non-member of that board to fill the vacancy left last year by former park board member Ed Behnke.

Serving Culver - bearded or not

CULVER BEARD CLUB EXTRAORDINARY IN CULVER ON VARIETY OF LEVELS

-----------------
Its members are a decade or more younger and in different stations in life, many of them, than some of the familiar faces volunteering to serve the Culver community, and -- not so much in spite of that fact but because of it -- the existence of the Culver Beard Club may send some unexpected messages, locally and beyond.

For starters: it's possible to have fun -- and do something for others -- in Culver, Indiana in the dead of winter. On a weeknight.

Culver through the years: mid-May in decades past

May 18, 2014

40 years ago, May 16, 1974
Culver's new Swirly-Top Drive In opened for business May 15...a big feature being a drive-up window which will insure speedy, quality service. There are plenty of reasons to go indoors, too. A spacious interior features seating at booths for 60 people. The interior is paneled, and an antique motif is accented by a dozen Tiffany-style lighting fixtures. A red quarry tile floor adds to the rustic effect of the decor. The air conditioned Swirly-Top will feature a variety of sandwiches and "baskets" as well as a complete selection of fountain delicacies.

New Culver comprehensive plan outlined

May 18, 2014

The town of Culver is in the home stretch of finalization of its comprehensive plan, following a community open house and concluding meeting held May 8 at the town park depot.

Chicago-based consulting firm Houseal Lavigne spent the past 14 months in public workshops and small group meetings to develop the plan, which was available in print form -- and reviewed by projection on a screen during the meeting portion of the event -- and which Dan Gardner and Brandon Nolin of Hoseal said is also available on the town's website at www.townofculver.org.

New Culver park superintendent Hayden prepares to take the reins

May 17, 2014

Marc Hayden, Culver's new park superintendent, wasn't really in the market for new job when he saw the listing for the position in the newspaper a few months ago. In fact, he initially "didn't pay much attention" to the opening. But when he saw the ad still there a week later, he got on the phone and began asking the voice on the other end -- which turned out to belong to park board member Patty Stallings -- for some background on the job.

"That got my curiosity up," Hayden told the Citizen last week, "and I submitted my resume and...was hired."

‘Bikes & Bugs’ brings vintage bikes, VWs to town park May 24

May 14, 2014

Springtime, Lake Maxinkuckee, food, music, vintage bicycles, and classic Volkswagon 'beetle' cars and micro-buses. What's not to like?

That's the premise behind a new, planned-to-be-annual event slated for Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Culver's town park.

The "Bikes and Bugs" event is being sponsored by Rideon Bicycles on Lake Shore Drive and Kokomo's City of Firsts Volkswagen Club (www.cityoffirstsvw.com), according to Chris Chambers of Rideon, who describes it as "something to get the community involved and bring people to town of all ages.

Fishburn says goodbye after 30 years-plus at dental desk

May 12, 2014

It's one of those most Culver of Culver things.

For a great many Culver residents, there have always been two dentists to choose from, one at each end of town, and in a great many ways, the experience of dental visits remains largely unchanged, even for decades. And for many here -- and from surrounding communities -- Helen Fishburn's voice, face, and caring approach have been part of that experience, though as of last Thursday, that will change.
