CCHS wrestlers end careers on high notes

February 15, 2013

Culver Community High School wrestlers Allen Betts and Mark and Matt Hurford continue to strive for success day in and day out. All three of these wrestlers have one thing in common, other than all three being NSC and sectional champions: all three competed for a semi-state championship at Merrillville High School Saturday.

Williams was among first black students at CMA

February 10, 2013

The first African-American students to attend Culver Academies enrolled in 1965, when a student from Gary, Ind., and a gifted scholarship student from Watts (Los Angeles) enrolled as a sophomore and freshman, respectively.

Then-superintendent Gen. Delmar T. Spivey, according to an article in the summer, 1987 Culver Alumni magazine on the school's black student history, had said prior to the 1965 school year, "Our policy has always been that when a qualified black student applies, he will be admitted," and without fanfare, added the superintendent -- which was just what happened.

First black Culver High School grad, 1906, predicted shift in race relations

February 8, 2013

With the exception of Hollywood invention, it's rare in actual history that a real, live person steps outside the context of their own era and predicts something which today we hold as a given. So imagine the first African-American student to graduate from Culver High School, Clara B.

Culver park board nixes beer tasting event, hires programming director

February 7, 2013

The Culver park board's vote as to whether to allow a beer tasting event in the town park came down to an even 50-50 split, but the lack of a majority of favorable votes equaled a "no."

The decision came after lengthy -- and sometimes heated -- discussion between representatives of the proposed event, Evil Czech Brewery owner George Pesek and brewery manager Shawn Erikson, and the park board and audience.

Newly discovered writings put Culver tourism past into context

February 2, 2013

Before I delve into the main topic at hand, I should clarify a statement in last week's "If these walls could talk" column, which focused on the Jefferson Street ice houses. I wrote that "millions of tons" of ice was harvested annually from the operation, which reader Gary Shaffer good-naturedly called into question thus:

'ALMOST, MAINE' HITS ACADEMIES STAGE THIS WKD

Culver Academies' student play, "Almost, Maine," will hit the stage of Eppley Auditorium this Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

"This is a comedy we found this past summer that is all about love in the wilderness of Northern Maine," explains director Richard Coven.

"It’s a very charming piece and has some wonderful poignant moments. It’s done in a series of vignettes, that all happen at 9 p.m. – at the time when the northern lights appear in the sky."

Burke, student service group lauded by Lions

February 1, 2013

Members of Culver's Lions Club, which instills in its members regularly its oft-repeated mantra, "we serve and we serve and we serve," honored community members last week who embody that same spirit of service, as it does each January at its annual community awards banquet. This year's honorees were David Burke and the CYCO (Culver Youth Community Organization) Club.

Organizers hoping weather holds out for Culver ice event Feb. 8-10

January 31, 2013

Organizers are hoping the second time's a charm for a national-level ice fishing tournament scheduled for the weekend of Feb. 9 and 10 on Lake Maxinkuckee -- and if recent temperatures, and the ice forming on the lake as of press time are any indication, they may get their wish.

If these walls could talk: 200 E. Washington

January 30, 2013

It was noted in the last installment of our ongoing series of virtual "walks" through the history of notable buildings in Culver, that we're all but finished strolling around the downtown area. There are, however, a handful of properties well known to most readers whose histories ought to be included in our series.

One of these has particular significance to your local newspaper, which we'll explain shortly.

Culver Photo Booth brings old-fashioned fun into 21st century

January 29, 2013

They're the stuff of generations of movies and memories, perhaps thought lost in this age of instant digital imagery, but Grant Munroe of CGM Photography surmises the resurgance of popularity in photo booths boils down, as much as anything, to one simple element: fun.

That's been the cae without exception since he introduced the Culver Photo Booth (culverphotobooth.com), which residents will likely see around the community repeatedly in the coming months.
"It's fun for any age group," he says. "From my little nieces and
