CGA’s Neer sets 5K indoor national record at New Balance Nationals

March 16, 2011

NEW YORK — Waverly Neer had a feeling it might take a record pace to win the women’s 5,000-meter run at the New Balance High School Indoor Track & Field Championships.
She was right.
The Culver Girls Academy’s star senior and 2010 IHSAA state cross country champion set a national high school indoor record of 16:35.15 Friday night at New York City’s famed Armory Center and still had enough gas left in the tank for a PR in the mile race Sunday.

Joint student mission trip crosses boundaries, local and international

March 13, 2011

Over the past five years or so, students from Culver Community High School and Culver Academies have continued a collaboration which was unprecedented at the time of its debut: that of a shared mission trip to Mexico to serve people there through Habitat for Humanity.
The tradition is slated to continue this year, and two CCHS students joined representatives of the Academies at the Culver Lions Club’s February 23 meeting to discuss the project.

Best may be yet to come for CMA

March 12, 2011

CULVER — Winning championships is often a matter of peaking at the right time.
Culver Military Academy extended its win streak to eight games with its Sectional 19 championship victory over St. Joseph’s Saturday, and while the Eagles have played some solid basketball and even shown occasional spurts of brilliance in that stretch, head coach Mark Galloway believes he still hasn’t seen his team’s best game yet.

Culver ‘Soup for the Soul’ returns March 29

March 11, 2011

Students and faculty hope the proverbial third time’s a charm for the student-led “Soup for the Soul” community event slated for Tuesday, March 29, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Culver Elementary School. For two years running, the event, originally the brainchild of CES 6th grade teacher Missy Trent and art teacher Joyce Lyman, saw 6th graders creating a wide array of hand-made pottery in the form of bowls, ladels, cups, and other items, in which community-donated soup is served to diners from the community, who then take home and keep the student-made items.

Culver Academies Choir will join a combined chorus of select singers from every age group -- high school, college, and adult -- in the high-profile, four-day Mozart International Choral Festival June 29 through July 3, in Salzburg, Germany. The festival culminates in a performance of Mozart’s Mass in C “Coronation,” K.317, and additional selections, in the historic Salzburg Dom. Professor Janos Czifra, director of music at the Dom, (which is the same position Mozart held) and Dr. Eph Ehly, will co-direct the concert, accompanied by a professional Austrian orchestra and European soloists.
