We continue our series of semi-regular journeys through Culver’s past as we look at the lives of historic buildings in the Culver area. For now, we're strolling down Main Street's east side in down¬town Cul¬ver, making our way south.
This week we pay a visit to 202 South Main Street (the east side of the street at the southeast corner of Main and Madison Streets), today's Lakeside Auto, owned by Steve McDaniel.

Monterey Elementary will close - board votes 5-2 to end operations after this year

Unquestionably there was anger and sadness, but when the Culver Community School board’s vote arrived Monday night to close Monterey Elementary School, few were likely surprised.

Council bids Doss fond farewell

A grateful Culver Town Council bid a fond farewell to Town Manager Michael Doss last week, as he prepared to leave Culver for his native West Virginia immediately following the April 26 meeting.
Doss told the Council and audience, “I can’t say how much this town has meant to me over the last couple of years, personally and professionally.”
Noting Culver residents and Council members were “very welcoming to me” when he first arrived in Culver, Doss praised the Council and Town Clerk, among others.

from Culver Community High School and their families to treat them to a catered meal and celebrate their accomplishments by way of the Club's annual senior awards banquet, held last Wednesday, April 27 in the CCHS cafeteria.
After a well-received round of songs from the school's jazz choir, accompanied by pianist Ann Bigley and directed by Diane Derrow, Student Council President Mark Maes took to the podium to review the past year, which he described as one of "love, loss, excitement, and anticipation."

When the news hit the wires May 3 that lifelong Hollywood star Jackie Cooper had died, many remembered him as one of the most popular child stars of the 1930s (though he’s also remembered for his more recent role as newspaperman Perry White in the 1970s and `80s "Superman" movies).
While still a teenager, however, Cooper's star shone over Culver when he was cast in the lead role (as "Tom Allen") in the 1939 Universal Studios production, "The Spirit of Culver."

Culver community garden seeks helping hands to make a difference

This spring marks the third year for the Culver Community Garden located at the corner of Lewis and Slate Streets. A large variety of fresh vegetables are grown and donated to the Culver Community Food Bank to provide clients there with fresh produce during the growing season, according to Connie Richie, one of the volunteers facilitating the project. The excess produce, she adds, is sold at the local Farmer’s Market, with the proceeds given to the local food bank for the purchase of other needed items.

Gladie’s Deli headed east, will incorporate bakery offerings

A little over three years ago, Lee Willhite and family opened Gladie’s Deli in downtown Culver. Now the restaurant is moving closer to home for Willhite, but also hopefully closer to where traffic from Culverites and visitors flows: 415 Lake Shore Drive, just a block west of the town park and public beach (on the east end of the building perhaps best known as the former home of City Tavern/Diner), and literally right across the street from the Willhite family’s home.

Special competition this Saturday in Culver

PLYMOUTH — Athletes were preparing Saturday at Lincoln Junior High School for a very special competition that will take place Saturday, May 7 at Culver Military Academy’s track field. Adults from the Marshall-Starke Special Olympics team were practicing their individual sport and setting their best times for the upcoming competition.
Each will compete in several events ranging from running long jump, relays, javelin throw, shot put, softball throw, and 400-meter walk, to name a few. Those 30 and older will also compete in Bocce.
