Culver Garden Court will break ground with ceremony Friday

CULVER — A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Friday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at 701 S. Main St., Culver. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded a grant in the amount of $1,445,600 to develop a 13-unit residence for the elderly under the Section 202 Supportive Housing Program. The new development will be known as Culver Garden Court and will be the twelfth Garden Court Community.

Culver’s Relay for Life will return for a fourth year, and organizers -- adult and student alike -- are hoping to continue the momentum from the first three events, which surpassed many expectations to raise more than $100,000 each year and place Culver on the map as one of the few school-hosted locations for the cancer-fighting event in the entire country. The success of past Relays has also drawn attention for the fact that much of the organizing, planning, and execution of the event is student-led.

Surrisi returns to Culver at two new ventures

Rumors have circulated around Culver in recent weeks that popular local chef Larry Surrisi will once again be pleasing palettes in his role as one of the community’s several in-demand food gurus. This following the closing last year of the City Diner, Surrisi’s most recent prior food venue. Now John Zehner, owner of two eateries here, has confirmed Surrisi will join another of Culver’s chefs of renown, Greg Ogle, at two newly reformatted restaurants.

'39 Steps’ brings comedy, intrigue to Culver stage

Culver Academies’ Huffington Concert Series for the 2010-2011 season concludes with Alfred Hitchcock’s award-winning play, “The 39 Steps,” Wednesday, April 6, starting at 7:30 p.m. onstage at Eppley Auditorium on the Academies campus.

Free computer classes at Culver-Union Township Public Library

Culver-Union Township Public Library (CUTPL) will start a new session of free computer classes in April. Classes will be held Monday evenings at 6 p.m. and Friday mornings at 10 a.m., and will last two hours.
Sessions for the month of April will cover Computers for Beginners (two weeks), Internet and E-mail. These are hands-on classes and the library will provide computers. Those with their own laptop computer can bring it to the classes.

For now, we're strolling down Main Street's east side in downtown Culver, making our way south to the southeast intersection of Main and Jefferson Streets, 102 S. Main, the site of today’s Culver Academies Museum & Gift Shop, which opened there in October, 2009.

B.I.R.D. will fly again next month, seeks projects, volunteers, donations

The committee behind Culver's B.I.R.D. (Building, Inspiring, Recreating, and Discovering) is planning a one-day return of the successful service event it sponsored locally last summer. Scheduled for Saturday, April 23, the student-led service day combines the efforts of students from Culver Academies and Culver Community High School, as well as adults from both areas and beyond, to assist anyone in the community with work projects with which they need assistance (last year's efforts ranged from cleanup jobs to painting or repairing houses).

INDIANAPOLIS — Not satisfied with ending a 36-year sectional championship drought, the Eagles kept on rolling to eventual regional and semistate titles.
On Saturday, their historic run came to an end as defending state champion Washington handed Culver Military Academy a 61-46 loss in the Class 3A State Basketball Final at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
