Pinder looks back on a century’s memories, wisdom

January 20, 2012

Fay Pinder celebrated her 100th birthday at her son Ed and daughter-in-law Lora’s crowded Culver home last month. Some 100 people flowed through: right around one guest for every year she’s been alive, though no one would guess she has passed the century mark, to look at her.

Trojans top Cavaliers, 46-33

January 19, 2012

BOURBON — After a mere one-point decision to Triton Saturday, Culver head coach Kyle Elliott expected his players to start with some confidence Tuesday.

Instead, Culver put up just two points in the first quarter as the Class A No. 7 Trojans jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the break. The two teams went back and forth the rest of the night, but Culver was never able to get out in front, and Triton polished off 12 of 17 freebies in the final frame as the Cavs tried to stretch the clock, handing the challengers a 46-33 loss in a boys Bi-County opener at The Trojan Trench.

Lady Cavs avenge loss to Triton

January 18, 2012

BOURBON — Sometimes it’s better to be wrong.
Triton head coach Adam Heckaman had a presentiment before his girls’ Bi-County opener with Culver Tuesday that his girls may not have been focused on the task at hand.

The Class A No. 6 Lady Trojans coughed up 15 first half turnovers to surrender a 10-point lead at the intermission, and the defending tourney champion Lady Cavaliers held off their hosts down the stretch for a 45-40 win at The Trojan Trench.

Culver advances to play LaVille in the late semifinal at LaVille Thursday night at 8 p.m.

Past clerk recalls the laughter and frustration of the job

January 17, 2012

Editor's note: in our final follow-up to an earlier article on the town clerk's position in Culver -- in conjunction with a look back from 30-year deputy treasurer Kay Davis -- following are recollections from Marizetta Kenney, clerk-treasurer for a decade.

More than 500 show for Reinhold benefit

January 17, 2012

Culver’s Rob Reinhold may have summed up the enormity of Saturday’s benefit for his family in describing the event: “Overwhelming.”
Family members, friends, and attendees in general would concur, though the question lingers as to what was more overwhelming: the incredible community turnout or the amount of money raised. In both cases, the numbers are — well, overwhelming.

Past clerk recalls Davis' contributions, changes in the office

January 16, 2012

Editor's note: In conjunction with our previous article on the retirement of Culver deputy clerk (for the past 30 years) Kay Davis, two clerk treasurers under whom she served in the past have contributed memories. First up is Bobbie Washburn Ruhnow, who worked with Davis for 12 years starting in 1983.
---------------------------

Kay and I worked together from November of 1983 to December of 1996. When I was elected Clerk-Treasurer in 1983, we had a great transitional period in November when Marizetta Kenney showed me the basics I needed to know to begin my tenure.

Kay Davis’ unique perspective encompasses 30 years of town government

January 12, 2012

When Kay Davis exited Culver's town hall the last workday of 2011, the door closed on 30 years of her service to the town of Culver as its deputy clerk, through five clerk treasurers and countless changes, major and minor, in the day-to-day operations which keep the town running. She also represents the only consistent witness to the inner world of town operations in a gradually changing Culver over three decades.
