Monterey Elementary closing rumors surround April 25 meeting

Rumors have been circulating in the Culver-Monterey area as to the fate of the Monterey Elementary School, a part of the Culver Community School Corporation. Specifically, word has spread that April 25’s school board meeting may officially sound the death knell for the school.

Up to last weekend, Culver’s “little community that could” Relay for Life events had raised $349,000. After last Friday and Saturday’s Relay, according to organizers, make that $472,000.

The Culver Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club’s annual Top Ten awards banquet marked its 19th year in gala fashion last Tuesday evening at the Pretty Lake United Methodist Church banquet center. As in years past, the top ten graduating seniors from Culver Community High School were not only recognized themselves, but given an opportunity to laud the teachers most influential on their scholastic careers and success, alongside a veritable feast prepared by the ladies of the church.

Police urge attentiveness after vehicle thefts

Culver police are once again reminding residents to be wary of their vehicles’ security following a rash of thefts in recent weeks from parked cars, as well as the theft of one vehicle itself.
Culver Chief of Police Wayne Bean notes the thefts were not the results of break-ins, but perpetrators entering unlocked cars. Most thefts, he notes, were stereos, though one vehicle had a laptop stolen.

NFL star Vinatieri returns to Culver Relay Friday

Organizers of Culver's fourth annual, all-night Relay for Life have confirmed the return of NFL Colts placekicker Adam Vinatieri Friday evening to the event.

ND coach Kelly's wife to speak at Culver Academies, will help kick off Relay `11

Two-time cancer survivor Paqui Kelly, the wife of Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly, will share her story and personal experience with students of Culver Academies at an all-school assembly at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday (April 13) at Eppley Auditorium.
“Her story is truly inspirational and we are ecstatic to have her speak with students about her experiences with cancer and to rev everyone up for the Relay For Life,” said senior Kyle Blankenship (Crown Point, Ind.) who is co-chair of the Academies Relay For Life.

If these walls could talk: 110, 112, and 114 S. Main

We continue our series of semi-regular journeys through Culver’s past as we look at the lives of historic buildings in the Culver area. For now, we’re strolling down Main Street’s east side in down¬town Cul¬ver, making our way south.
This week, we’re stopping in at a couple of buildings today connected as one, at 110 (which includes 112) and 114 South Main Streets, where today we find The Collectors antique store (110 and 112 S. Main) and The Bear End (114 S. Main), both retail destinations operated by Ruth Mackey.

Town Manager Doss announces resignation

Michael Doss, Culver Town Manager since early 2009, has announced his resignation at the end of this month, explaining he plans to return to his native West Virginia for "family reasons."
Doss is quick to emphasize he's neither leaving Culver for any negative reasons about the community or its people, nor leaving due to any problems in his familu.
"Everything is fine with my family," he says. "I'll leave with all the good memories of had of this community, but it's time for me to be with my family.
