Local author Gleason to read from new Vietnam book March 9

Local author Ray Gleason will read from his new book, "The Violent Season," about the generation of young Americans who experienced the Vietnam war, Friday, March 9, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Culver Coffee Company in Culver.

Academies hosts Band Fest. Feb. 24-26

CULVER, Ind. – About 90 selected musicians and choir members from nine military schools and colleges from across the country will be on the Culver Academies campus Feb. 24-26 as the Academies host the 36th annual Military School Band Festival. The Academies last hosted the MBSF in 2005.

INDIANAPOLIS — A trio of area wrestlers from Culver have high hopes for the 74th Annual IHSAA Individual State Wrestling Finals, which got underway Friday at 6 p.m. with the quarterfinals set to begin Saturday at 9:30 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Culver Community’s Matt Hurford enters the 182-pound field after a third-place finish at Merrillville Saturday, while Culver Academies wrestlers Anthony McHugh and Kayla Miracle enter the tourney at 132 and 106, respectively.

McHugh joins Hall as a two-time state qualifier, while Miracle and Hurford make their first trip to Conseco Friday.

Culver Wings restaurant debuts

Most Culverites have heard (or said) in recent years that the one dining option Culver may be missing, with the disproportionate
number of fine destination restaurants for which its known, is what Culver-raised entrepreneur John Zehner calls "a moderately priced, family friendly place."

The kind of place, he says, where diners can order wings, burgers, or (in this case all-beef) franks.

That's the need identified and addressed by way of Culver Wings, which opened yesterday (Feb. 15) at the site of the former Yacht Club, at 115 E. Jefferson St. in the downtown Culver area.

Culver Comm. Schools superintendent reacts to 'No Child Left Behind' change

CULVER — An announcement at the Federal level Thursday exempting Indiana schools, along with those in nine other states, from some parts of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) prompted an immediate response from Tony Bennett, state superintendent of Pubic Instruction.

Bennett said, “Indiana will take advantage of the flexibility we have been granted with this waiver by continuing to pursue policies that produce better academic outcomes for our children.”

CES 'Soup for the Soul' returns March 14

Culver Elementary School's Soup for the Soul will return for a fourth helping March 14, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the school cafeteria, which is good news not only for hungry diners in the community and the students who will serve them, but the charities benefiting from the popular event as well.

Center for Culver History hosts traveling exhibit on Indiana political process

The Center for Culver History will welcome Faces in the Crowd: Indiana and the Political Process, a traveling exhibition of the Indiana Historical Society, from February 6 through March 6. This exhibition will be on display at the Culver Union Township Public Library, located at 107 N. Main Street.

Culver wrestler Miracle makes history at semistate

Culver Academies’ Kayla Miracle became the first female wrestler to earn an IHSAA state berth with a fourth-place finish at the Merrillville Wrestling Semistate Saturday.

Miracle earned a 17-0 tech fall and a 10-0 major decision over Lafayette Harrison’s Daniel Davis and Lake Central’s Brandon Truver in the first two rounds, respectively, to make it out to the ticket round, ultimately placing fourth in the 106-pound bracket with a 5-2 loss to Merrillville’s Mike Garza in the consolation round.

Culver police investigate armed robbery at Family Dollar store

On Saturday, February 11, at approximately 8:40 p.m., a male subject was reported as entering the Family Dollar Store located 18701 S.R. 10 in Culver. Once inside the store the male subject approached the cashiers and displayed a weapon and bag then demand money from the cashiers at gunpoint.
