Sampson, Montgomery, Troutman retire from Academies

July 3, 2011

With the end of the 2010-2011 school year, Culver Academies’ faculty members David Sampson and Patricia Montgomery retired with 78 years of combined service and were honored with emeritus status. The Culver Educational Foundation Board of Trustees established emeritus status in 1983 as a way of honoring retiring faculty/staff who have served at least 20 years at Culver. Also retiring was Linda Troutman, who served 19 years as a resident director in Atrium and Benson dorms.

Root beer stand, a Culver legend, turns 55

July 2, 2011

There are few entities so quintisentially "Culver" -- and so cherished by generations -- as that small root beer stand near the beach, known since 2003 as The Original Root Beer Stand.
This summer marks the 55th anniversary of the business operating in Culver, at 824 Lake Shore Drive. Prior to that, then-owner Donald "Casey" Jones had operated it in Plymouth, but moved the building, foundation, and equipment by truck from Plymouth to Culver! At the time, it was an A&W root beer stand, as it would stay for some time.

Digitization of vintage Culver Citizens stirs debate at library board mtg

July 1, 2011

An at-times heated discussion over digitization of the Culver Citizen newspaper occupied a good deal of the Culver-Union Township Public Library board’s June 21 meeting.
The board, at its April meeting, had voted to approve a proposed agreement between the library and the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver allowing the Society to temporarily remove -- one volume at a time -- older issues of the Culver Citizen newspaper, which the library owns in bound books dating to the early 20th century, for digital scanning onto computer.

Yacht Club exits Cove, combines with 115 Grill

June 30, 2011

While many in Culver may have noticed extensive remodeling to the façade of the new 115 Grill on east Jefferson Street downtown, there’s been a not-so-noticeable change in the business and its sister restaurant, the nearby Yacht Club, which recently opened on the second floor of the Culver Cove resort.
According to John Zehner, developer of both projects over the past several months, the Yacht Club will depart from the Cove and join its operation with 115 Grill (which is located, appropriately enough, at 115 East Jefferson Street), with both entities combining under the Yacht Club banner.

CGA’s Waverly Neer wins national junior championship

June 29, 2011

EUGENE, Ore. — Waverly Neer was never known for a tremendous kick during her high school athletic career.
But she sure picked the right time to come up with one.
Neer, a recent Culver Girls Academy graduate, outsprinted Kayla Beattie of Woodstock, Ill., in a dramatic homestretch drive to win the women’s 3,000-meter run Saturday night at the U.S. Outdoor Junior Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Her winning time — 9 minutes, 16.23 seconds — is equivalent to running two miles in less than 10 minutes.
Beattie was just a step behind at 9:16.39.

Culver Boys & Girls Club auction dazzles

June 29, 2011

A captivating -- and at times side-splitting -- performance by renowned Indiana University-based a capella group Straight No Chaser provided what attendees doubtless found the perfect end to a perfect evening, at the Culver Boys & Girls Club's annual auction and banquet.
Running through several comedy-laced musical numbers, the group even brought Dianne Osborn, one of the principle organizers of the event, to the stage to croon their rendition of "My Girl" to her, earning appreciative laughs and cheers from the crowd.

Changes to Maxinkuckee skyline among wind turbine topics at Culver Kiwanis meeting

June 26, 2011

When Nextera Energy paid a visit recently to Culver’s Kiwanis Club, the basic information presented was similar to that at a meeting in Argos the previous week (see Lydia Beers' article here: http://www.thepilotnews.com/content/wind-turbine-project-raises-controversy), but several in the audience raised questions and concerns more specific to the Culver-Lake Maxinkuckee area.
