Local businesses have long lamented the challenges of maintaining a viable income outside the summer months in Culver, and many would love to see a larger year-round population base to help boost sales.

More affordable housing in the area, says Mark Damore Jr., owner of the Lakehouse Grille on Lake Shore Drive, "would help me as a restaurant owner and businessperson in general, and most of all it would help Culver. We want people that work locally to live locally.

Stepping into his second calendar year as Culver's town manager (having started last June), Dave Schoeff is looking forward to a busy year for Culver, with development of the town's comprehensive plan as perhaps its central undertaking.

But for the uninitiated, what's all the fuss about a comprehensive plan, and what's it got to do with your average Culver resident, anyway?

"It's like a business going without a business plan," he says. "If you don't have goals and objectives, you're not going to go anywhere.

Getting back on track with our ongoing series of virtual "walks" through the historic buildings of Culver, we're still strolling by some important structures "off the beaten path" of the downtown area proper, whose series we finished last year. We've turned west from Main Street and are dropping by 125 W. Jefferson, the Culver Post Office.

For the record, we haven't the time or scope in this article to focus on the fascinating and lengthy history of all things postal in Culver; instead, we're primarily focusing on the property and its precursors.

Hubbard Street returns to Eppley stage March 12

The Huffington Concert Series continues at Culver Academies with the return of the Chicago-based Hubbard Street II Dance Company (www.hubbardstreetdance.com) Tuesday, March 12, at the Eppley Auditorium on the school's campus. The company, which has performed to rave reviews in 44 states and 19 countries.

Described as “A near-perfect storm of movement, music and choreography†by the Los Angeles Times, the modern dance company will take the stage at 7:30 p.m.

Elkay-Medallion plant boasts upgraded facility, new production horizons

Chances are, most Culver residents drive with some regularity by the Elkay (Medallion, if you're looking at the sign) factory at the corner of West Mill Street and State Road 17, oblivious to the fact that the plant churns out some 650 cabinets -- some custom made -- each day for national vendors like Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, and Sears, employing some 260 workers. They're also one of the few plants in American which can run both traditional and frameless cabinets on the same line, at the level they do, thanks to an "extreme assembly makeover" at the factory last July.

According to presenters at an event last Thursday, chances are a mass shooter at a local school, business, or public place will already have departed, committed suicide, or been disarmed by a bystander before law enforcement agencies arrive at the scene -- in which case, civilians need to think ahead and plan, should the worst take place.

Meet Culver park’s new activities director

After much planning and discussion over the past year or more, Culver's parks and recreation department now boasts a programming director, in addition to the role of park superintendent Kelly Young.

Already on the job and conceiving programs, activities, and events is Donna McKee, who arrived in Culver seveen years ago along with her family when husband David's job relocated them from Michigan. The McKees have two sons, Dylan (3rd grade) and Derek (1st grade) in the Culver Elementary School, who Donnas says "keep me very active."

Culver schools to cut 7-10 teachers in $500,000 in budget reductions

The Culver Community School corporation’s budget will be $500,000 less by 2014, which translates to a job loss for 7 to 10 teachers, likely mostly from the Culver Elementary School staff.

The news initially hit school staff members in a letter circulated by school superintendent Brad Schuldt last month, though the decision was formalized regarding $500,000 in budget cuts this year at the school board's Feb. 4 meeting, in which it was also resolved to make cuts totaling $700,000 within two to three years.

Chamber hears proposal to combine Culver museum, visitor’s center

Members of a Culver museum steering committee shared a vision they hope will address two of what they feel are Culver's needs -- that of a dedicated center to act as a "one stop shop" for visitors to the community seeking any and all information about Culver, and that of a center preserving the stories of Culver's past -- with the Culver Chamber of Commerce last week.
