Popular children's author Buck Wilder (aka Tim Smith) paid Culver Elementary School a visit recently to read from his books, which include "Buck Wilder's Small Fry Fishing Guide" among others, and discuss the importance of spending time outdoors being active and enjoying nature.

Culver Garden Court hosts ribbon cutting, open house

Culver's Garden Court senior living facility held its much-anticipated open house and ribbon cutting last Tuesday, the culmination of some 15 years of searching for land, said Dr. Ronald Liechty, Garden Court board president, and over two years of work to prepare and build the facility.

A number of people gathered at the 801 S. Main Street Garden Court, where rooms were available for tours and refreshments offered.

The Pinders' biological family was surrounded by a family of regular, adoring customers as well, including some who dined there weekly and even nightly.

"Our customers became our family," Lora muses. "On birthdays or holidays or when there were new babies, our customers were so generous.

It may be hard for many Culverites to believe, but it's been 10 years (or will be, this fall) since Ed and Lora Pinder and family closed the doors for the last time on one of the most beloved local eateries in most residents' memories. Ed told the Citizen at the time it had "even older men my age" crying. "There were lots of tears," he said.

Culver’s Titanic connection -- 100 years later

Of the approximately 700 survivors of the April 12, 1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic ship, only one would eventually settle in Indiana, and August Wennerström made Culver his home -- a home he loved so much he named one of his children Culver. Further, evidence of the Titanic connection to Culver still exists in the form of three maple trees planted in memory of the children of the widower of one soul lost in the sinking.

Debate over outdoor Culver dining ends in temporary agreement

After much discussion, Culver's town council gave a tentative green light to Cafe Max owner Susie Mahler to install a railing on the sidewalk outside her establishment at 113 South Main Street in downtown Culver, with the intention of full-fledged outdoor dining this summer.
