If these walls could talk: 103 S. Ohio

March 9, 2013

Continuing our "virtual" journey through the history of various Culver buildings, we're still wandering around notable spots west of Culver's downtown, before heading to another part of town entirely. And, since we strolled by the Culver Post Office last time out, we're now at the door of what is today Culver's only locally-based (if not locally-owned) pharmacy, CVS, at 103 S. Ohio Street.

Culver's LIFT enjoying success and accepting new applicants

March 9, 2013

Culver’s LIFT group is celebrating its second anniversary. Established in 2011, LIFT is Marshall County Community Foundation’s (MCCF) first affinity group, and it is an association of volunteer women whose mission is to collectively support the advancement of women in the Culver area. LIFT does this through mentoring, volunteering, and providing resources to other women.

A donor-advised fund at the MCCF which members contribute to annually allows the group to support women in the Culver area to succeed in both their personal and professional lives.

Taking action on housing matters: the pros and cons - PART 4 of 4

March 8, 2013

Some have attempted to make inroads into more moderate income offerings. Among these are longtime residents Ralph and Barbara Winters, who in 1999 developed a set of two-bedroom apartments on the western end of Cass Street. Ralph Winters has also been part of various discussions over the years regarding housing in Culver, as a past member of the town council and other boards and committees.

Housing costs and Culver: the impact on public schools - PART 3 of 4

March 8, 2013

Nearly half of the certified faculty and staff at Culver Community Schools live outside Marshall County, and a tiny handful in Culver proper, but superintendent Brad Schuldt points out that, for the school system, "it's not just about employees.

"Families with young children have difficulty finding housing; that's a major contributor to our declining enrollment."

More, says Schuldt, than what some might assume are major factors, such as quality of the school or competition from charter schools or state-allowed vouchers.

"The biggest reason is jobs and housing opportunities."

Housing costs and Culver: the local business perspective - PART 2 of 4

March 8, 2013

Local businesses have long lamented the challenges of maintaining a viable income outside the summer months in Culver, and many would love to see a larger year-round population base to help boost sales.

More affordable housing in the area, says Mark Damore Jr., owner of the Lakehouse Grille on Lake Shore Drive, "would help me as a restaurant owner and businessperson in general, and most of all it would help Culver. We want people that work locally to live locally.

Housing costs and Culver: where do we go from here? PART 1 of 4

March 8, 2013

Visit any number of businesses or entities in Culver during the day and observe who's at work there. Chances are by nighttime, they'll be out of town.

The who, what, and why of Culver’s new comprehensive plan, and other 2013 projects

March 5, 2013

Stepping into his second calendar year as Culver's town manager (having started last June), Dave Schoeff is looking forward to a busy year for Culver, with development of the town's comprehensive plan as perhaps its central undertaking.

But for the uninitiated, what's all the fuss about a comprehensive plan, and what's it got to do with your average Culver resident, anyway?

"It's like a business going without a business plan," he says. "If you don't have goals and objectives, you're not going to go anywhere.

If these walls could talk: the Culver Post Office

March 2, 2013

Getting back on track with our ongoing series of virtual "walks" through the historic buildings of Culver, we're still strolling by some important structures "off the beaten path" of the downtown area proper, whose series we finished last year. We've turned west from Main Street and are dropping by 125 W. Jefferson, the Culver Post Office.

For the record, we haven't the time or scope in this article to focus on the fascinating and lengthy history of all things postal in Culver; instead, we're primarily focusing on the property and its precursors.
