Photographer Rosen to visit Culver Jan. 29

January 22, 2014

Culver Academies' Crisp Visual Art Center hosts visiting artist photographer Claire Rosen on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 6:45 p.m. in the Toots Henderson Auditorium. Rosen is based in New York and was included on Forbes "30 Brightest under 30" list of 2012.

If these walls could talk: 630 Lake Shore Drive

January 20, 2014

After our last 'virtual' stop -- in our ongoing series of journeys through the annals of historic structures of Culver -- our eastwardly meander up Lake Shore Drive's commercial district had led us to today's Lakehouse Grille, the site of no less than three distinct properties (and any number of businesses) in the past.

Naturally enough, then, we're wandering past 630 Lake Shore Drive -- the home of today's Rideon Bicycles, owned by Chris Chambers (and profiled in the Citizen last summer), though for a great many years it was one of a number of Culver grocery stores.

Decorating much more than a pastime for co-winners of CYCO contest

January 19, 2014

Tom and Diana Overmyer, winners of the "Most Creative" award in the Culver Youth Community Organization's first annual Christmas decorating contest (the Jim and Charlotte Hahn house on Lakeview Street won "Best Traditional" in the contest), aren't new to winning decorating contests, and they certainly aren't new to delighting community members with their array of outdoor Christmas decorations.

Park board votes to terminate superintendent

January 19, 2014

The Culver park superintendent position is vacant after a vote by the park board at its Jan. 8 meeting to end the tenure of longtime superintendent Kelly Young.

The meeting, which was otherwise fairly quiet in contrast to more heated recent exchanges, was near its conclusion when park board president Tammy Shaffer said it had been brought to her attention "and several other people's" that Young had spoken to some town council members about Young's own discomfort with the park board and "the current work environment that we have all been placed in at this time."

Blizzard of 2014 recalls memories of much harsher storm of `78

January 8, 2014

As people in the Culver area and beyond continue to dig out from what will surely be a historic blizzard, comparisons have been made to the -- admittedly far more severe -- monumental blizzard of 1978.

History has been made locally in one area, at least: for the first time ever, Culver Academies cancelled classes for three consecutive days due to weather (Monday through Wednesday), while classes were only canceled part of one day in 1978.

If these walls could talk: 620 Lake Shore Drive

January 2, 2014

-- CULVER HISTORY CORNER --

In the last installment of our ongoing series of "virtual" walks through the historic buildings of Culver, we began an effort to sort out the mix of buildings and entities which, through the years, occupied the space which is now home to the Lakehouse Grille, which today is numbered 620 Lake Shore Drive.

Culver park board eliminates park activities director position

December 31, 2013

-- Other changes implemented in heated Dec. 20 board meeting --

What could have been assumed to be a quiet, end-of-year park board meeting to tie up business, instead involved heated exchanges and included, among other actions, dissolving the park activities director position.

At the Dec. 20 special park board meeting, board member Rhonda Reinhold proposed discontinuing the position, held by Donna McKee since she was hired in January, 2013. Board members said they would investigate whether McKee's contract is up at the end of January, as board member Patty Stallings suggested.

Changes in job description leave park position future in debate

December 24, 2013

Tempers flared once again at last week's meeting of the Culver parks and recreation board, whose members reaffirmed that park superintendent Kelly Young would soon be vacating her apartment in the park's beach lodge (though they did amend the timing of the move), and adopted a new job description for the superintendent position which left at least one audience member asking if Young still has a job (she does, said board president Tammy Shaffer).

If these walls could talk: 218 and 220 Lake Shore Drive

CULVER HISTORY CORNER
------------------------------
In our ongoing series of virtual 'walks' through the historic buildings of Culver, nowadays the next establishment (since we last visited the former Clara's restaurant just east of the movie theater) is the Lakehouse Grille. But it wasn't always so.

In fact, today's Lakehouse occupies space which once played home to three different simultaneous businesses, one of which remains in the form of the "bar" side of the Lakehouse, which most Culverites will remember as the old Lakeview Tavern.

Culver Chamber honors Lions, Peseks, Kenney at annual awards banquet

December 18, 2013

The night of the Culver Chamber of Commerce's annual awards banquet was unseasonably warm, an appropriate parallel to the festivities inside the Corndance Cafe on Main Street last Tuesday, where the Chamber lauded recipients of its Volunteer of the Year, Businessperson of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement Awards.
