If these walls could talk: 624 Lake Shore Drive

February 2, 2014

CULVER HISTORY CORNER

---------------------------

Picking up where we left off in the last installment of our ongoing series of "virtual" strolls through the history of notable buildings in Culver, we're dropping in to visit Larry at today's Brockey Insurance Building at 624 E. Lake Shore Drive, across from the town park.

Our Culver ancestors would have known the entire block, however, as the Hayes Block, which included what is today 624 Lake Shore Dr. and what was 642 Lake Shore Drive.

Park-related matters continue to be hot topic at town council mtg

February 2, 2014

Members of Culver's town council and the audience at the Jan. 14 meeting debated questions of whether to add a seventh member to Culver's park board, as well as whether to hold a "town hall" style meeting to discuss the future of the park.

The reorganized council -- which shifted its presidency to Ginny Munroe and vice presidency to Bill Githens -- opted to table the matter of an additional park board member, something about which they had created an ordinance and even voted on first reading, though finalization still awaits a second and third reading.

Ice sculptures to be part of Feb. 14 wkd ice fishing, winter event in Culver

January 29, 2014

It appears likely the weather will cooperate in facilitating enough ice for a second annual North American Ice Fishing Conference national tournament on Lake Maxinkuckee (since the first year's attempt in 2012 was a no-go due to lack of ice), the weekend of Feb. 14 through 16.

One difference this year is the addition of at least the first iteration of a previously hoped-for winter carnival, according to Tony Sellers of the Culver Chamber of Commerce.

New radio station to be Culver-based

January 25, 2014

MAX 98.3 WILL BE COUNTY'S ONLY LOCAL FM STATION

It's been a little over 80 years, but Culver will soon have its own radio station once again, in the form of Max 98.3, which will also mark the return of FM radio to Marshall County, whose present radio offerings are limited to AM frequencies.

Culver council updated on CVS changes, more

January 22, 2014

Culver's CVS Pharmacy is looking to add a drive-through window at the alley on the west side of its Ohio Street building, though the move would require the town of Culver vacating said alley and could impact the town-owned parking lot at Madison and Ohio Streets as well.

This according to town manager Dave Schoeff, speaking to the Culver town council at its final meeting of 2013, last Dec. 30.

Photographer Rosen to visit Culver Jan. 29

January 22, 2014

Culver Academies' Crisp Visual Art Center hosts visiting artist photographer Claire Rosen on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 6:45 p.m. in the Toots Henderson Auditorium. Rosen is based in New York and was included on Forbes "30 Brightest under 30" list of 2012.

If these walls could talk: 630 Lake Shore Drive

January 20, 2014

After our last 'virtual' stop -- in our ongoing series of journeys through the annals of historic structures of Culver -- our eastwardly meander up Lake Shore Drive's commercial district had led us to today's Lakehouse Grille, the site of no less than three distinct properties (and any number of businesses) in the past.

Naturally enough, then, we're wandering past 630 Lake Shore Drive -- the home of today's Rideon Bicycles, owned by Chris Chambers (and profiled in the Citizen last summer), though for a great many years it was one of a number of Culver grocery stores.

Decorating much more than a pastime for co-winners of CYCO contest

January 19, 2014

Tom and Diana Overmyer, winners of the "Most Creative" award in the Culver Youth Community Organization's first annual Christmas decorating contest (the Jim and Charlotte Hahn house on Lakeview Street won "Best Traditional" in the contest), aren't new to winning decorating contests, and they certainly aren't new to delighting community members with their array of outdoor Christmas decorations.

Park board votes to terminate superintendent

January 19, 2014

The Culver park superintendent position is vacant after a vote by the park board at its Jan. 8 meeting to end the tenure of longtime superintendent Kelly Young.

The meeting, which was otherwise fairly quiet in contrast to more heated recent exchanges, was near its conclusion when park board president Tammy Shaffer said it had been brought to her attention "and several other people's" that Young had spoken to some town council members about Young's own discomfort with the park board and "the current work environment that we have all been placed in at this time."

Blizzard of 2014 recalls memories of much harsher storm of `78

January 8, 2014

As people in the Culver area and beyond continue to dig out from what will surely be a historic blizzard, comparisons have been made to the -- admittedly far more severe -- monumental blizzard of 1978.

History has been made locally in one area, at least: for the first time ever, Culver Academies cancelled classes for three consecutive days due to weather (Monday through Wednesday), while classes were only canceled part of one day in 1978.
