Council fields concerns over impact of water problems, Academies sewer rate

Not surprisingly, Culverites -- especially business owners -- had some questions and concerns over the incapacity of Culver's drinking water for five days ending last week, which led to some discussion at the Oct. 13 meeting of Culver's town council.

Town manager Dave Schoeff explained an old water line and valve were exposed Thursday evening during digging of a trench for a new storm line in front of the First Farmers Bank at Main and Jefferson Streets.

Those who recall one of Culver's Little League dugouts' untimely demise due to a powerful storm this past July can rest assured commissioners are working to replace it -- and its counterpart -- with new structures. Culver EMS volunteers share joys, sorrows of Sandy victims during east coast volunteer effort

While most of us watched coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy late last month on the news, members of Culver's EMS service were there in person, assisting victims and authorities.

Culver-Union Township EMS director Bob Cooper Jr. and full-time, Advanced EMT Kimberly Irsa made the journey early in the morning Sunday, Oct. 28, ahead of the storm actually landing on the east coast of the United States.

UPDATE: Town of Culver boil order canceled

The town of Culver has canceled the boil water order in effect for the past several days, according to town manager Dave Schoeff.

The boil order went into effect late Thursday night, after water was restored to the town of Culver following a water main break during construction in the downtown area, according to Schoeff.

Those with questions may contact Culver Town Hall at 842-3140.

Jim Dewitt, born in Morocco, Ind., lost his mother and father to tuberculosis when he was age 4 (his mother) and 6 (his father), leaving him and his brother and sister to grow up mostly at an orphanage in Mexico, Indiana.

Not long ago, Jim Dewitt was in the Culver post office when the topic of the beloved tenderloins he served at the Lake Shore Lanes bowling alley between 1953 and 1978 came up. Soon, various folks in line were speaking up in favor of their favorite menu item, and the nearly 35 years since the popular spot closed seemed to melt away.

Bean updates on state of Culver food pantry

Culver food pantry director Leroy Bean stopped by Culver's REAL Meals last week to update diners there on the pantry's efforts.
The pantry, located in the lower level of Grace United Church of Christ on Plymouth Street in Culver, is an effort of the Culver Council of Churches, and is open every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon. Bean said he gathers food from the food bank in South Bend, as well as purchasing it locally at Park N' Shop, Kroger, and Aldi, where some food is sold at cost.

UPDATE: Town of Culver water restored, boil order in effect

November 8, 2012

Late Thursday night, water was restored to the town of Culver following a water main leak in the downtown area, according to town manager Dave Schoeff.

However, now that water is back on, residents should boil their water before drinking (see details below) until further notice from the Town of Culver.

Schuldt reacts to DOE school ‘report cards,’ shares concerns over evaluation model

During the October 31 State Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Tony Bennett announced more than 61 percent of Indiana schools received A or B letter grades for the 2011-2012 school year. Of the 16 schools graded in Marshall County, only two had a D (Argos Elementary and Jefferson Elementary in Plymouth), while none had an F.

Culver Community High School was given a C rating, while Culver Elementary received an A, the same grade as Culver Academies.
