Geiselman “Lives United” in her advocacy for transportation services

November 16, 2013

CULVER – “Live United” isn't just a slogan. It's a way of life for one active Culver senior. Her journey, recently shared with the United Way of Marshall County, shows that community engagement sometimes involves lending a hand. And sometimes it means lending your voice to support a cause and help build a better life for all.

Jeanette Geiselman figures that she has paid her dues.

“I'm originally from Rochester,” she said, adding with a laugh, “but I married a man from Culver and I've been here 60 years so I imagine Culver has accepted me by now.”

We're once again on the move, strolling through the historic buildings of Culver in our continuing series of looks at the history of said buildings. It's a short walk from our last entry, Culver's longtime movie theatre, to the store next door at 614 Lake Shore Drive, which many longtime Culverites will recall as "Hansen's" or simply "Clara's."

A major step forward has been announced in the potential impact of a drug developed in a Culver laboratory in an effort to aid in the ongoing battle against methamphetamine (or meth) nationwide.

Only mobile cone beam imaging lab in Indiana is Culver-based business

November 15, 2013

Ruth Birk, a familiar name in the Culver area, is hoping to take a somewhat unfamiliar technology beyond Culver and across Indiana, and improve lives in the process.

Parked unassumingly in Birk's Culver driveway is the only mobile dental cone beam imaging "office on wheels" in Indiana, and one of a relatively small number in the entire U.S.

Culver park lights, rink may facilitate a ‘winter wonderland’

November 15, 2013

Culver's park is one step closer to becoming a "winter wonderland" for both locals and visitors, after extensive discussion and decision-making on the part of the parks and recreation board at last Wednesday's monthly meeting.

Discussion began as follow-up to two matters suggested at prior meetings: that of including Christmas lights in the park alongside those installed in the town proper, and of installing a temporary ice skating rink at the site of the basketball courts alongside Lake Shore Drive this winter.

Culver’s Lindvall reflects on role in Navy Seabees history, veterans’ contributions

November 11, 2013

When Culver's Bryce Lindvall joined the Navy in 1981, he didn't expect to find himself in some of the unusual positions he did: a member of the Navy "Seabees" (immortalized in the 1944 John Wayne movie, "The Fighting Seabees"); at work at Camp David with the highest level of security clearance possible (to work in the same room as the U.S. President and Vice President); and pictured in the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers and on television, the first Navy Seabee in a press conference since the Vietnam War.

CCHS principal on enrollment, funding, voc ed, and more

November 8, 2013

Culver Community High School principal Albert Hanselman's talk to Culver's Kiwanis Club last Thursday was centered on the scholarship program the club offers to local high school students, and its results, but he also addressed several "big picture" matters concerning the school, both the good news and the challenges it faces.

ENROLLMENT AND FUNDING

Hanselman, who noted he's been 26 years with CCHS (from which he himself graduated), 14 of them as principal, discussed what is possibly the most pressing issue the school corporation is facing today: that of declining enrollment.
