Changes in job description leave park position future in debate

December 24, 2013

Tempers flared once again at last week's meeting of the Culver parks and recreation board, whose members reaffirmed that park superintendent Kelly Young would soon be vacating her apartment in the park's beach lodge (though they did amend the timing of the move), and adopted a new job description for the superintendent position which left at least one audience member asking if Young still has a job (she does, said board president Tammy Shaffer).

CULVER HISTORY CORNER
------------------------------
In our ongoing series of virtual 'walks' through the historic buildings of Culver, nowadays the next establishment (since we last visited the former Clara's restaurant just east of the movie theater) is the Lakehouse Grille. But it wasn't always so.

In fact, today's Lakehouse occupies space which once played home to three different simultaneous businesses, one of which remains in the form of the "bar" side of the Lakehouse, which most Culverites will remember as the old Lakeview Tavern.

Culver Chamber honors Lions, Peseks, Kenney at annual awards banquet

December 18, 2013

The night of the Culver Chamber of Commerce's annual awards banquet was unseasonably warm, an appropriate parallel to the festivities inside the Corndance Cafe on Main Street last Tuesday, where the Chamber lauded recipients of its Volunteer of the Year, Businessperson of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Culver school board formally hires new superintendent

November 29, 2013

In a contrast to last week's heated and debate-laden public hearing, the Culver Community School board voted unanimously at its Nov. 25 meeting to hire Dr. Vicki McGuire as its new superintendent of schools, replacing outgoing superintendent Brad Schuldt as of Jan. 1.

Between 20 and 30 audience members remained largely quiet during the meeting, as opposed to the Nov. 18 meeting, during which some Culver Comm. High School faculty members questioned the selection process and the choice not to promote current CCHS principal Albert Hanselman to the superintendent position.

SOME BEMOAN DECISION TO PASS OVER CURRENT PRINCIPAL FOR POSITION

---------------
The Culver Community School board met November 18 for its first public hearing regarding the contract for a new superintendent of schools, and while the name of the person chosen as the next superintendent of schools -- set to replace outgoing superintendent Brad Schuldt in January -- was not made public, tempers flared from a handful of attendees over the matter of who was not chosen.

McGuire is currently the principal at Jennings County School Corporation in Versailles, Indiana.

The decision was not without controversy. Full coverage of last week's (Nov. 18) heated meeting will appear in this week's print edition of The Culver Citizen. More details regarding the Nov. 25 meeting will appear in next week's Citizen and online in the coming days.

Outdoor Culver Christmas decorating contest launches

November 22, 2013

The Culver Youth Community Organization (CYCO), a service organization comprised of students from Culver Community High School and the Culver Academies, is reviving a long-defunct Culver tradition this year in the form of a outdoor Christmas decorating contest for the Culver area.

Longtime Culver residents may recall the longtime annual decorating contest sponsored for years by the Culver Chamber of Commerce and Jaycees, respectively, though that contest ended more than two decades ago.

EMS funding, future detailed at special town council session

November 22, 2013

Though tensions ran high at a recent meeting of Culver's town council regarding the future of Culver's Emergency Medical Service, the special follow-up work session on the subject, which took place prior to last Tuesday's council meeting, seemed a very different story. In fact, by the end of the meeting, many in the audience and on the council were lauding the work of EMS director Brandon Cooper in explaining the department's funding, future plans, and steps towards compliance with new state mandates regarding EMS training scheduled to kick in next July.
