Police rule Culver shootings murder-suicide

Culver police have announced findings following Tuesday's autopsy, concerning the shooting deaths last Wednesday evening of 44 year old Michael Price and 16 year old Stephen Suthard, who died at a home on Madison Street.

According to a release by Culver police, "Investigation at the scene, as well as autopsies conducted on Tuesday, December 4, have determined that Suthard died of multiple gunshot wounds as a result of actions by Michael Price, who then took his own life and died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Longtime Culver residents will remember how different was the appearance of the east end of Jefferson Street in decades past, as alluded to in a recent entry in our ongoing series of virtual "walks" through Culver, building by building.

This week we'll visit the old site of what most Culverites simply called "the grain elevator," whose property resided along the south side of Jefferson, not too far from the lake shore.

Culver prepares for (hoped-for) centennial voyage to Presidential Inaugural

Of course it's a matter of enormous significance each time Culver Academies' Black Horse Troop and Equestriennes prepare to march in the U.S. Presidential inaugural -- but this coming inaugural parade is especially meaningful, as it marks 100 years of Culver's participation in the event. And preparations are already underway.

Culver Academies choir/band in concert Sunday at Ancilla

Culver Academies' choir, directed by Stacey Warren, and band and orchestra, directed by Major William Browne and Chad A. Gard will perform their annual Christmas concert Sunday, December 2, at 3 p.m. at Ancilla Domini Chapel, PHJC Ministry Center, in Donaldson, Indiana. The event is free to the public and a reception will follow in Cana Hall.

Community meal at St. Mary’s Friday night
St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church’s monthly community meal will take place Friday, Nov. 30. On the 30th day or each month, a community meal will be provided for anyone interested in attending. Wesley Cookie Walk Saturday

Jean Kindred (pictured here) prepares a tray of delicious cookies for the annual Wesley United Methodist Women's Cookie Walk. The popular sale will be held this Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the church basement at 511 School Street, between the elementary and high schools. Please enter through the front doors of the church and come downstairs.

Homemade cookies will be sold for $6 a pound. Shoppers may choose your cookies from the thousands available. Sweet treats of candy and such will also be sold.

Culver community gathers in prayer to mourn shooting victims

The Culver community gathered Thursday night at a standing-room-only Wesley United Methodist Church on School Street, where an ecumenical, community-wide prayer vigil was held to help students and parents work through their grief.

The vigil was in response to the shooting death on Madison Street of two Culver residents, 44 year-old Michael Price and 16 year-old Stephen Suthard, Wednesday night in an incident still under police investigation.

UPDATE: Police release names in Culver gunshot deaths

Police Thursday afternoon released the names of the the two Culver residents killed by gunshot in Culver last night.

Michael Price, 44, and 16 year-old Stephen Suthard, both of Culver, died at 419 Madison Street Wednesday night, said town marshal Wayne Bean, who noted autopsies are still in the works. The bodies were discovered in the home by Price's wife, who called police around 10:41 p.m.

Council fields concerns over impact of water problems, Academies sewer rate

Not surprisingly, Culverites -- especially business owners -- had some questions and concerns over the incapacity of Culver's drinking water for five days ending last week, which led to some discussion at the Oct. 13 meeting of Culver's town council.

Town manager Dave Schoeff explained an old water line and valve were exposed Thursday evening during digging of a trench for a new storm line in front of the First Farmers Bank at Main and Jefferson Streets.
