Park board session yields plan of action for controversial public pier

For all the sound and fury leading up to the May 30 special park board work session, the five board members present(minus member Ed Behnke) left the meeting with an action plan conceived amidst little of the heated debate or lengthy verbal wranglings which have marked some of the more contentious board meetings of the past year.

Culver's park board passed several items of recent or longstanding contention last week during a meeting which also saw follow-up on the matter of a much-discussed public pier, and a round of spontaneous audience applause for the writer of a letter to the editor of The Culver Citizen concerning park board controversies.

Filmmakers who scouted Culver locations last month for a possible movie shoot in Culver have announced the town has officially been chosen as the site for filming later this summer.

Foresman, Silly Safaris next up in summer series at the park

The next concert in the park at the Culver town park will feature vocalist-guitarist Steve Foresman (steveforesman.com). Foresman plays "a mixture of rock, folk, classic country, and rhythm & blues (and) mixes a few original songs from the Foresman songbook, along with interpretations of artists such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, and the Beatles," according to his website. Foresman has opened up for The Doobie Brothers, Heart, The Beach Boys, REO Speedwagon and STYX.
Foresman will take the stage at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 8. The performance is free and open to the public.

Birk awarded by Indiana Lions

Longtime Culver Lion Patricia Birk received the Presidential Award for Leadership at the Indiana Lions Convention on May 4 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The award was presented by the International Lions President, Wayne Madden, at the Saturday night banquet attended by approximately 400 Lions from across the state of Indiana.

Culver VFW and Auxiliaries officers installed

June 2, 2013

Following a pitch-in dinner May 8, the installation of officers for VFW Post 6919, Culver, and its Auxiliaries was held. Installing officers was Past Post Commander Joe Miller. Officers are: Post Commander Brian Linhart, Senior Vice Commander Frank Setola, Junior Vice Commander Harvey Podvin, Adjutant Herb Newman, Quartermaster Rich Kelso, Chaplain Charlie Nix, Surgeon M T Schmidt, three-year Trustee L B Montgomery, three-year House Committee Rich Kelso, and Service Officer Roger Wise.

CCHS recognized by US News & World Report

Culver Community High School was recognized last week by U.S. News & World Report in its evaluation of more than 21,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards and how well they prepare students for college.

CCHS was one of 105 Indiana schools receiving recognition, and was singled out for a bronze award.

Academies honors 25-year employees with rings

Staff of Culver Academies who have attained 25 years of service to the school were honored recently at an all-school meeting at the school’s Eppley Auditorium, where the tradition of giving 25-year staff Culver rings was continued. Culver tree commission partners up to plant 41 leafy new residents

Forty-one new trees will beautify and shade the School Street entryway into Culver, thanks to the efforts of Culver's tree commission and several volunteers.
