Maddox marks four decades of business ...and virtually everything else in Culver

November 9, 2014

Four decades ago this year, Culver's Mike Maddox first launched the business which would become one of the staple entities in electrical, plumbing and heating in this community. Along the way he's had an almost "Forrest Gump"-esque interaction with significant events in the area, from earning an article in "Hot Rod" magazine for launching local "burn-out" contests, to helping start the Marshall County Dive Team, to central involvement in Culver's EMS and police, besides becoming a highly visible (on the huge bass drum) member of the Culver Pipes & Drums.

Prosser convicted to Culver thefts

November 8, 2014

A Marshall County jury deliberated for over three hours Oct. 29, after which it found Russell Prosser guilty of one count of possession of stolen property, one count of resisting law enforcement, four counts of unauthorized entry of motor vehicles and four counts of theft of items found in those vehicles.

After hearing two days of testimony, the jury returned its verdict to presiding Judge Dean A. Colvin of Marshall Superior Court No. 2. Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Nelson Chipman represented the State, and Plymouth attorneys Jere Humphrey and Matthew Sarber represented Prosser.

New gallery adds to downtown Culver atmosphere

November 8, 2014

Culver’s business community is now home to a vibrant, new art gallery, IT’S YOU! at 110 S. Main Street in downtown Culver.

In her adjoining studio, separated from the gallery by long drapes, Jan Peyser, owner and silversmith jeweler, is inspired by “cascading and uplifted forms in nature, dance, and architecture.” In her gallery, she offers meticulously designed and hand-crafted collections by American and Canadian artisans carefully chosen for their attention to detail and excellent craftsmanship.

After several months without an official pastor at the helm, the pulpit at Culver's Emmanuel United Methodist Church (on South Main Street) is now occupied by Rev. Tom Richards, who brings an unusual background to the position.

Monterey Hardware store has long, storied past

November 2, 2014

The fact that a trip to Loehmer's Do-It-Best hardware in Monterey feels like a trip back in time is no coincidence; in a way, it is a trip back in time (see our story on the hardware today here: http://thepilotnews.com/content/monterey-hardware-store-hearkens-back-it...)

Monterey hardware store hearkens back to its legacy of small-town service and style

November 2, 2014

When Culver's century-plus-year-old local hardware closed in 2013, the community collectively felt the blow of the loss of local, hometown service and convenience. Loehmer's Do It Best hardware in Monterey, then, just might be a welcome alternative to "big box" options, and one much closer to home for Culverites seeking that necessary part in a hurry -- or more, for that matter.

Culver council candidates square off at Nov. 4 election

November 2, 2014

Three candidates for two vacant seats on Culver's town council will square off at the polls on Nov. 4 at the Culver train station-depot on Lake Shore Drive. A third council seat, that of present council member Bill Githens, will be filled by a party appointment as Githens will take up his elected position on the Marshall County council in January.

Two of the three candidates -- current council member Sally Ricciardi and Dave Beggs -- were selected in August at the town's Republican causus, while the third, Joel R. Samuelson, is running as an independent.

Legislators laud groundbreaking effort to address future of Culver public schools

October 30, 2014

If there was one theme from Indiana Senator Randy Head (R- Logansport) and State Representative Tim Harman (R - Bremen) during their meeting with the Culver Community School board and school administrators last week, it's that the school took the right, and proactive, approach: facts, not vitriol, and direct dialog over mailings.
