Rideon Bicycles first business to move to former Culver hardware space

September 13, 2014

Marshall County's only bicycle sales and repair shop is about to take on downtown Culver.

Rideon Bicycles, located for the past seven years on Lake Shore Drive in Culver, will relocate this fall to the former Culver hardware building at Main and Madison Streets. However, the shop won't be located in the space most familiar to former hardware customers.

Instead, according to Rideon owner Chris Chambers, the bicycle shop will reopen in the lower level of the building, with a courtyard entryway facing Madison Street.

Stage II brings familiar names, faces, and music to Culver and area audiences

September 7, 2014

There's a lot about recently-formed Culver vocal group Stage II that feels like a throwback to a bygone era -- and in a good way.

Not only is the music performed described by member Cliff Berger as something "you don't hear anymore" ("The good music of the 1940s and `50s," he says. "Gershwin, Carmichael, Mercer -- that close harmony."), but the names and faces of Stage II's members hearken back to the days when the area's longest-running theatre and singing group was just getting out of the gate.

If these walls could talk: 830 N Lake Shore Drive

September 6, 2014

This week's entry in our ongoing series of virtual "walks" through the historic buildings of Culver could almost as well have accompanied our previous entry, on the current Papa's Pizza building, since that structure was originally built as part of the property comprising this week's subject, the present-day Inn by the Lake Bed & Breakfast, at 830 N. Lake Shore Drive, just north of Papa's.

Fire radio situation critical, says chief

September 6, 2014

Those in Culver wondering why the fire alert whistle blew several times in a row last weekend had an explanation at last Tuesday's Culver town council meeting.

Culver fire chief Terry Wakefield told the council the department is having major radio problems preventing firemen from receiving emergency tones on their radios when fire alerts are sent out. To add to the problem, the county's backup system -- contacting firemen by cell phone -- is currently down, a problem Wakefield said he's been told currently has no date in sight for repair.

Culver nostalgia late August - early September

September 2, 2014

50 years ago, Aug. 26, 1964:
After being promoted to specialist four, Glen Patton, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Patton of Route 1, Culver, received his Chevron denoting his new rank from 1st Lt. Walter N . Foster Jr., commander, Headquarters Company U.S. Army Signal Group, during ceremonies on Okinawa July 22. Patton, a communications center specialist with the group, entered the Army in June, 1963...he was graduated from Aubbeenaubbee High School, Leiters Ford, in 1963.

St. Mary’s Largent recalls papal role ahead of sabbatical next month

August 31, 2014

When Fr. Jeffrey Largent, pastor at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, contacted Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI to inquire about concelebrating Mass with him in Rome this fall, the retired pontiff was adamant: the two must have dinner.

ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL DIRECTOR ADDRESSES MISCONCEPTIONS
-

In the wake of the closing of Culver's town beach on Aug. 8 due to the presence of e coli in the water, rumors, questions, and assumptions ranged from the cleanliness of the water there, to even whether it's safe to swim in lakes at all (as opposed to swimming pools).

If these walls could talk: Papas and its predecessors

August 30, 2014

As we continue our series of "virtual" journeys through the historic buildings of Culver, we last week left the cherished domain of the Original Root Beer Stand, which means this week we're logically stopping by another Culver icon (for over 35 years), Papa's Pizza.

ACADEMIC DEAN OUTLINES SCHOOL'S FORWARD-THINKING APPROACH TO EDUCATION

When Culver Academies boarding school students begin classes Aug. 26, they'll once again be stepping into the stream of a balance of time-honored traditions, as well as an academic model carefully developed around what academic dean Kevin MacNeil described to a Culver Kiwanis Club audience earlier this summer as the strongest elements in contemporary education.
