Culver Kiwanis Club receives grant for new cyclo-cross event this fall

March 28, 2014

The Culver Kiwanis Club hopes to add another community event to the area's roster this fall, and they've received a Marshall County Tourism grant to help the process along.

The club is planning a cyclo-cross event for Sunday, Oct. 19 (that's the Sunday of this year's second annual Culver Fall Fest), as the first manifestation of an annual fund-raiser for its local scholarships program.

Variety of options on table at park work session

March 28, 2014

After a hiatus of several weeks, the newly-enlarged (thanks to the addition of Union Township appointee Bob Osborn) Culver park board met for the first time last Wednesday, discussing a wide range of issues during a lively daytime work session and a lengthy evening board meeting.

During the work session, the two most prevalent matters were the future of various piers at the park, as well as repairs to, and future use of the beach lodge building. Discussion of both topics included plenty of audience suggestions and ideas.

Park board discusses hiring process for new super, building renovations

March 28, 2014

Culver's park board looked to some major decisions for 2014 at its first formal meeting in weeks, involving the hiring of a new park superintendent, major renovations to the park's beach lodge, enhanced lifeguard training, and more, at its March 12 meeting.

March 28, 2014

Marshall County – Working on a tip March 21, officers from the Indiana State Police, Culver Police Department, and Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, proceeded to 624 Forest Place apartment 3A in Culver in an attempt to locate a stolen car and a female subject that was wanted on a warrant.

If these walls could talk: 640 Lake Shore Drive

March 26, 2014

One of the longest-lived contractors in Culver resides at the site of the next stop in our ongoing journey through the historic buildings of Culver. Bennett's Plumbing and Heating, of course, has long resided at 640 Lake Shore Drive -- at the corner of today's Lake Shore Drive and Liberty Street -- though it wasn't always so.

In fact, for around half its commercial life, the space today occupied by Bennett's was home to two separate store fronts.

Culver area’s Norris recalls WW2 service with WAC

March 24, 2014

There are just a handful of surviving World War II veterans in the Culver area today, and it might surprise some to learn that one is a woman.

Lida Norris, a 1936 graduate of Culver High School, didn't serve, as some assume when they learn of her status as veteran, as a Red Cross nurse or the like. Instead, she was one of over 150,000 American women who served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during the war, they being among the first women (besides nurses) to serve within the ranks of the United States Army (for the record, Culver's other WWII vet is Pearl Harbor survivor Jim DeWitt).

If these walls could talk: 634 Lake Shore Drive

March 20, 2014

It's been a while since we've had occasion to continue our ongoing series of virtual 'walks' through buildings of note from Culver's past to today, and this week we've stepped next door from our last stop, to 634 E. Lake Shore Drive, the home for just over a decade now of Culver Coffee Company. The building's location is notable, too, because CCC owner Dawn (Minas) Brockey's husband, Larry, operates his insurance company out of the storefront to the west -- (hopefully) a convenient arrangement for a couple!

CRC helps facilitate unprecedented STEM program for area students

March 12, 2014

CRC WILL MATCH LOCAL DONORS' STEM DOLLARS

The Culver Redevelopment Commission is offering to match any local individual, organization, or entity wishing to support Culver Community Schools' efforts to facilitate the new STEM-based program outlined in the accompanying article on this page -- no matter how small the financial contribution, until they reach a total of $10,000.
Expenses may include new computers, software, or other equipment needed in support of implementing Project Lead the Way's program, which are not covered by grant funds.

Doggie care -- to go

March 12, 2014

CULVER'S JOHNSTON TURNS LOVE OF DOGS INTO AREA'S ONLY MOBILE GROOMING SERVICE

Anne Johnston of Culver describes herself as "addicted to dogs," and she's channeling that addiction into a new service she hopes will fill a need and make life easier for dog owners in the area...and, of course, help feed her addiction at the same time!

Council paves way for new park appointment, considers land annexation, visitor’s center funding

March 11, 2014

The several weeks' delay in filling the two vacancies on Culver's park board -- which has left the much-debated board short of a quorum for most of 2014 to date -- appears to be nearing an end, after an announcement and action taken at the Culver town council's Feb. 25 meeting.
