St. Mary’s Largent recalls papal role ahead of sabbatical next month

August 31, 2014

When Fr. Jeffrey Largent, pastor at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, contacted Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI to inquire about concelebrating Mass with him in Rome this fall, the retired pontiff was adamant: the two must have dinner.

ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL DIRECTOR ADDRESSES MISCONCEPTIONS
-

In the wake of the closing of Culver's town beach on Aug. 8 due to the presence of e coli in the water, rumors, questions, and assumptions ranged from the cleanliness of the water there, to even whether it's safe to swim in lakes at all (as opposed to swimming pools).

If these walls could talk: Papas and its predecessors

August 30, 2014

As we continue our series of "virtual" journeys through the historic buildings of Culver, we last week left the cherished domain of the Original Root Beer Stand, which means this week we're logically stopping by another Culver icon (for over 35 years), Papa's Pizza.

ACADEMIC DEAN OUTLINES SCHOOL'S FORWARD-THINKING APPROACH TO EDUCATION

When Culver Academies boarding school students begin classes Aug. 26, they'll once again be stepping into the stream of a balance of time-honored traditions, as well as an academic model carefully developed around what academic dean Kevin MacNeil described to a Culver Kiwanis Club audience earlier this summer as the strongest elements in contemporary education.

NEW BOOK OF TOLKIEN ESSAYS SHOWCASES HOUGHTON'S CONTRIBUTIONS, UNUSUAL JOURNEY

There's a humorous story in William Strow's hardcover "Vignettes of Culver" collection of essays about the new pastor arriving at Wesley United Methodist Church in Culver to find Ralph Osborn, in work clothes, mowing the lawn at the church. Ralph had graduated from West Point and helped found Osborn Seed, and was just helping out while the usual lawn-care man for the church, Forest Houghton was away, watching his son John graduate from college.

Park board seeks further community input as lodge renovation plans considered

August 21, 2014

Culver's parks and recreation board is hoping to involve the public more in conversations and considerations regarding the impending renovation of the beach lodge in the town park, and towards that end hopes to schedule a public "meet and greet" event -- with refreshments -- in the lodge in the near future.

Passing of Emmanuel pastor Lewellen leaves void in church, community

August 20, 2014

When Pastor Ron Lewellen of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Culver passed away May 25 after a brief (and unexpected) illness, he not only left the congregation of one of the community's longest-lived churches mourning its leader of the past 12 years, but also left a lifetime legacy as pastor, husband, and father.

In fact, Lewellen -- who had intended to retire from preaching when he retired from his longtime job as second in command at the Essroc plant in Logansport in 1999 -- hadn't intended to be the pastor of Emmanuel...and in fact was never a Methodist pastor at all.

CULVER HISTORY CORNER
-

A busy, newsy summer has kept us from continuing our "virtual" journey through the historic spaces and places of Culver, and to a large extent much of this week's content, while very timely in one sense -- since the families associated with Culver's long-lived root beer stand were this year's Lake Fest parade marshals -- in another sense is at least partly redundant, since we reviewed the history of the business in this year's Lake Fest insert around a month ago.
