CCHS, CCMS students discuss bullying during convocation

October 22, 2014

In a rare joint convocation of both Culver Comm. Middle and High School students, the high school auditorium last Wednesday was home to a special event focusing on the effects of bullying among children and teens.

Led by CCHS guidance counselor Brenda Sheldon and CCMS counselor Missy Trent, the event was part of a month-long endeavor to focus on the issue within the school corporation and, thanks to Trent's passionate endeavors in recent weeks, the entire community. It was also timed to coincide with National Bullying Prevention Week, Oct. 4 through 10.

Preservation effort offers incentives to homeowners, seeks to retain local culture

October 21, 2014

Preserving historic buildings around Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee isn't just relevant for its own sake -- it may also save property owners (or not-for-profits or municipalities) plenty of money. And it may also help save the culture and flavor of a Culver many fear is disappearing fast.

That was part of the message delivered at two recent events, and it may be welcome especially in areas where some are concerned that the historical and cultural legacy of the community is giving way to a trend of destroying the old and replacing it with massive "mini-mansions," as some have suggested.

New book on Vonnegut house restoration offers “vagabond’s”perspective

October 17, 2014

Local readers can add a new book to the pantheon dedicated to some aspect of Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee, and/or its history, though this one differs noticeably from most.

Culver Vonnegut legacy much deeper than famous author

October 17, 2014

Late author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is commonly listed alongside the best-known literary and cultural figures influenced by the waters of Lake Maxinkuckee and its surrounding shores and culture, and he's likely the best-known to contemporary audiences (as opposed to other luminaries such as Booth Tarkington, James Whitcomb Riley, Lew Wallace, Meredith Nicholson, and Cole Porter).

Vonnegut cottage restoration exemplifies historic preservation possibilities

October 17, 2014

Much has changed on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee since the heady days of the 19th century when the first cottages began appearing, especially on the east shore, which boasts many of the oldest such structures on the lake. One change is the demise of many of the most historic homes in the area (not to mention their replacement with often-massive, luxurious structures departing markedly from much of the historic architectural culture of the lake's storied past).

Wesley Preschool begins year with new classes, staff, and location

October 11, 2014

The start of the school year this year at Wesley Preschool (located at the Wesley United Methodist Church) in Culver saw a great many changes -- most of them additions to its offerings to parents of young children in the area.

Besides the much-discussed addition of its daycare ministry (picked up where the same ministry left off at St. Mary of the Lake, just down the street), Wesley has not only continued its longtime preschool program (which is nearing its 50th year of existence), but expanded it to include three-year-old youngsters.

Town manager Schoeff announces resignation

October 11, 2014

The town of Culver will once again be on the hunt for a new town manager, following the announcement from present manager Dave Schoeff that he will resign effective Oct. 17.

Schoeff, who was hired in the spring of 2012, informed town council members via a letter last week explaining he has "an opportunity in another community.

"I have made a lot of friends here in Culver in the last 2+ years and have enjoyed working with you all," Schoeff wrote in the letter. "I have a lot of respect and deep feelings for you and our staff here."

Culver Fall Fest to return Oct. 17-19

October 10, 2014

Culver's premiere Fall Fest last year received high marks from virtually all attendees, with the hope from the start being that the event would become an annual one, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy the area's charm and beauty outside the busy summer season.

That hope will come to fruition the weekend of Oct. 17 through 19, when the festival returns with expanded offerings each day of the weekend.

Transition to new position natural for CCMS' Trent

October 5, 2014

If Missy Trent's name isn't a familiar one to Culver area readers, it should be.

The former Culver Elementary 6th grade teacher not only spearheaded the (now-defunct) "Soup for the Soul" charity fundraiser, but annually required students in her reading class to take part in an area service project, whether it was organizing dances to support local Make A Wish Children or the county Humane Society, or visiting residents of Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, or any number of other endeavors.

Culver counselor Trent hopes to ‘paint the town orange’ against bullying

October 5, 2014

Culver Community Middle and Elementary School guidance counselor Missy Trent wants to eradicate bullying from local schools, but she says parents and community members may be one key to making that happen.

With that in mind, she's looking to the Culver community as a whole to help "paint the town orange."

October 22, explains, Trent, is Unity Day, part of a national campaign to fight bullying, something she says she "really wanted to make a big deal out of."
