Chase Hunter, a 2007 Bremen High School graduate, was recently sworn-in as a Muncie police officer. He is shown with Chief Steve Stewart and Mayor Dennis Tyler. Hunter is the son of Rich and Cheri Hunter and the brother of Cody and Tony Hunter of Bremen. He graduated Ball State University in 2011 with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice.

‘Amazing Grace Race’

The students of St. Paul’s Lutheran School will present the musical, “The Amazing Grace Race,” at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, in the Bowen Auditorium. The musical tells the story of a team of runners in the race of life. The key to success is in Christ’s footsteps. The cast of characters: David Hochstetler, Brody Beasley, Anders Brurok, Ellen Fox, Jessica Hochstetler, Jessica Hughes, Bryce Wogomon, Katie Wonnacott, Brooks Feldman, Michael Nunez and Hannah Smeltzer. The play is open to the public. A free will offering will be taken at the door.

‘A champion’: Bremen mourns Gov. Otis ‘Doc’ Bowen

BREMEN — For a day the eyes of Indiana were on Bremen as it laid to rest one of its own.
The funeral for former Ind. Gov. Dr. Otis R. “Doc” Bowen drew the politically elite from both parties while hundreds – if not thousands – lined Center Street from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church to Bremen Municipal Cemetery for the procession route.

Dollar General to have career fair in Lapaz

In its effort to hire 10,000 new employees in May, Dollar General will host a career fair at Dollar General located at 690 S Michigan Rd. in Lapaz, Ind. on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to attract new store candidates to join its thriving and growing organization.

This event will be one of approximately 170 nationwide career fairs held on Saturday throughout the 40 states the retailer serves.

Trash pickup

BREMEN — The Town of Bremen's trash pickup for the week of May 27 has been changed from Monday's regular pickup on the east side of town to Tuesday, May 28. Tuesday's regular pickup on the west side of town will be Wednesday, May 29.

Residents getting new trashcans

BREMEN — Residents will receive new trash containers in the coming weeks, after the Bremen Town Council renewed its contract with the town’s waste hauler.
Residents won’t be able to use other trashcans since Allied Waste Services is moving to a completely automated collection system.
The automated collection system will use an ‘arm’ that extends from the garbage truck to pick up the trash containers.
The trashcans will be the same size as the recycling bins residents currently use. Both bins are 96-gallon totes.

Sure sign of spring: CHB fundraiser a success

BREMEN — Community Hospital of Bremen Foundation held its annual Spring Sensation, a dinner and silent auction fundraiser on Saturday, Apr. 20.
Surrounded by decorations to fit this year’s event theme, “Laughter is the Best Medicine,” attendees wandered from table to table, viewing a the items up for auction, including sports memorabilia like autographed basketballs and jerseys from University of Notre Dame players.
Tom Stiles, Bremen, was at the event with with his wife, Becky. They have attended Spring Sensation each year.

Dean is crowned 2013 BHS Lion King

BREMEN — Wowing a packed auditorium with both violin and piano solos, senior Thomas Dean nabbed the title of Bremen High School’s Lion King for 2013.
Dean, the son of Thomas and Madelyn Dean, bested a group of 12 other seniors to win the seventh annual charity contest before a raucous crowd of about 500 at Bowen Auditorium on Thursday, April 18.
“We never know what’s going to happen with 13 senior boys on stage,” Principal Bruce Jennings said as the evening got underway. “I hope I don’t lose my job – but I say that every year.”

Public invited to Bremen police memorial service

BREMEN — The Bremen Police Department invites the public to a memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at the the police department to honor law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty.
The event is being held in conjunction with National Police Officer Memorial Week, May 12-18.
Light refreshments will be provided at the Bremen service.
