Library assignment an area success

November 1, 2012

NAPPANEE — Although the 2012 Apple Festival had passed, people had until Oct. 31 to reminisce with scenes of the event at the Nappanee Public Library. And what better way to give things a better look than to see them through a child’s perspective — and in photograph form.
The library’s Knee-High Nappanee assignment was for children ages 5-12. In September, the library provided a photography lesson and a disposable camera to interested children. The assignment was to take pictures of the Apple Festival and return the camera to Nappanee Public Library for processing.

Ring finds its way back to its original owner

November 1, 2012

BREMEN — There’s a basic rule in life that if you find a high school class ring, you accept it as an invitation to solve a mystery.
After all, class rings are usually a person’s first autobiography: All of your worldly accomplishments displayed on one small circular piece of metal. Your initials represent the person you were then.

Emerald Alliance breaking music records

November 1, 2012

BREMEN — Oct. 13 may have been a typical Saturday for most, but not so for those associated with Bremen’s Emerald Alliance. Rather, that date was the one where the band made its mark on school history, becoming the first Bremen marching band program to compete at Franklin Community Schools (just south of Indianapolis) in the semi-state competition.
Bremen Public Schools’ Director of Bands Matthew Sutton said it was a challenge the students proved they were up to.

Potential issue for lake residents fixed

November 1, 2012

MARSHALL CO. — An issue for those living around the lakes in Marshall County was resolved with a quick and painless ordinance change at the Marshall County commissioners meeting Monday.
County Plan Commissioner Ralph Booker told commissioners that the minimum setback for buildings surrounding county lakes was 45 feet from the high water mark, according to a longstanding ordinance. Booker showed photos of many current buildings that are less than that distance away from the high water mark.

Fall play at BHS ‘funny with a message’

October 25, 2012

BREMEN — Family oddities take center stage for Bremen High School’s fall play, “You Can’t Take It With You.”
Director Mindi Slone said the comedy in three acts will have the audience “walking away laughing.”
“The Sycamore family is an eclectic, strange family,” said Slone, explaining the plot of the show. “They have one normal daughter, Alice, who falls in love with a normal boy. Alice then meets her boyfriend’s family, which is very uptight and proper.”
The play is set in 1936 in New York City. The cast of 19 includes some seniors as well as a few students who have never acted before.
