Police: 'Roughhousing' led to violent crime

BREMEN — A Bremen man has been arrested on charges of aggravated battery and battery by means of a deadly for allegedly stabbing a friend while “roughhousing” in early July, according to police.
Bremen police Chief Matt Hassel said Jason Houk, 34, of the 900 block of Center Street, was booked into the Marshall County Jail shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday.
Bremen police were called to an area near the intersection of Center and Third streets at about 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, on a report of a stabbing, the police chief said in a news release.

Kelty replaces Merritt on Bremen school board

BREMEN — Sheila Kelty is the newest member of the Bremen school board.
Kelty was sworn in at the board’s July 23 meeting, corporation officials said recently. Her term runs through December 2014.
Kelty holds a doctorate of Health Administration from Central Michigan University and an MBA from Ball State University.
Kelty currently works as a health care financial advisor for Purdue University. She previously worked as vice president of Community Hospital of Bremen from 2005 to 2009.

Meet the DYW candidates for 2013

BREMEN — Distinguished Young Women of Bremen, formerly Bremen’s Junior Miss, will be holding its annual program on Saturday, Aug. 17, 7 p.m. at the Bowen Auditorium.
There will be seven young women competing for this year’s title. 
Television personality Dean Huppert with WSJV will emcee the program this year.
Seven contestants will compete for the title of the 2014 Distinguished Young Woman of Bremen and over $2,000 in cash scholarships.
The DYW Program is full of scholarship opportunities for high school senior girls.

BREMEN — Distinguished Young Women of Bremen, formerly Bremen’s Junior Miss, will be holding its annual program on Saturday, Aug. 17, 7 p.m. at the Bowen Auditorium.
There will be seven young women competing for this year’s title.

Taking part this year are Shianne Mammon, Claire Schmidt, Dania Alvarado, Bay Cope, Alexis Pate, Sara Slabaugh and Madison Anne Stover.

School starts Wednesday so drivers need to be on the lookout

BREMEN — School opens Wednesday, Aug. 14, and the Bremen Police Department in cooperation with the Bremen Public Schools would like to remind motorists to be especially careful and watch for children on their way to and from school.

Police Chief Matthew Hassel said there will be an increase in child pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., 7:55 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. on Thursday, as well as 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Borkholder wins scholarship

Angelina Borkholder, right, is awarded the Roaring Lambs Scholarship by Sandy Krost, member of the Pathfinder’s Class of Bremen United Methodist Church. Borkholder will be a junior at Taylor University in the fall. The $500 scholarship was established in memory of Michael L. Devine in 1994 when he would have been a member of that high school graduating class.

Town council discusses gas station’s status

BREMEN — In the eyes of Bremen town officials, the dilemma of how to establish the future of the former Clark service station will not be resolved until the mystery of its recent past is unraveled.
The subject was a prevailing topic at the Monday, July 22, meeting of the town council.
What was once the Clark gas station and convenience store is now a significant eyesore at the juncture of Bowen Avenue and West Plymouth Street, one of the town’s most heavily traversed intersections.

Solid as a rock: Tri Kappa designates marker, donates to cause

BREMEN — Tri Kappa members recently dedicated its newly engraved rock placed on the east side of the playground at Jane’s Park. The rock designates the area maintained by the Bremen Epsilon Pi Chapter, which was established in 1960.
The Chapter keeps the park section weed-free, mulched and attractively landscaped as one of its projects benefiting the Bremen community.

Church responds to building concerns

BREMEN — Bremen United Methodist Church came together Sunday evening July 21 at “Digger’s Pond” for a long awaited and very special celebration event.
As the first phase of the church’s capital campaign is winding down, not only was it a time to celebrate the commitments made to the Scriptural Funding Campaign, but a time to reflect on the very long journey the congregation has made to reach this point.
Two United Methodist congregations, Grace and Salem, have each had a strong presence in the Bremen community for well over a hundred years.
