At Bremen’s most recent town council meeting Kevin Hines was recognized with the Pride in Bremen award for improvements he has made to the business at 119 N. Liberty, formerly the location of the Bremen bowling alley. The award has been given out to those owners of homes and businesses in the community that show — specifically — improvements that make them more attractive.

Softball teams ‘knock out’ cancer

While perhaps not unprecedented, it was certainly unusual for girls softball games to be played with pink softballs; but that’s what happened Saturday during the knock out cancer event held in Bremen.
The big 14U game between the Bremen Knock-outs and the Nappanee Storm was played to celebrate the lives of those who have beat cancer, in remembrance of others who lost their battle against the disease, and as a fundraiser to help save lives in the future.

The Bremen Police Department will be adding another law enforcement staff member in the fall. Patrolman Trent Stouder has been on the local force for nine years and will be the one acquiring the new partner, a trained K9 of his choosing. Working mostly second and third shifts keeping Bremen streets safe, Stouder is the one most likely to need assistance — though his physical stature and uniform including police equipment wouldn't show it.

Nurse practioner enjoys ‘the whole experience’

Deidre Coffey’s introduction into the world of medicine came at the age of 15 when she took a job at Miller’s Merry Manor in her hometown of Culver.
“My first job was at the Swirly Top Ice Cream until it burned down,” she said. “It was easy for a high school kid to get a part time job from 4 to 8 (p.m.) at Miller’s.”
The time she spent there left an impression on her that she carries with her today as a Nurse Practitioner for the last few months at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center’s Bremen Family Medicine.

School lunch cost to increase for 2011-12

USDA requires BPS to charge more for meals
BREMEN — The cost of school lunch for a student at Bremen Public Schools will increase 15 cents per meal this fall. 
The increase stems from the USDA Child Nutrition Authorization Act Sec. 205, which requires public schools to charge an amount that is equal to the difference between free meal reimbursement and paid meal reimbursement.
Bremen Public Schools is reimbursed $2.72 for every free lunch served and 26 cents for every paid lunch served. The difference is $2.46.

BKO wants to knock out cancer

BREMEN — Saturday, July 30 at Sunnyside Park there will be a fundraiser walk and remembrance ceremony hosted by the Bremen Knockouts (BKO) 14 and under softball team. The past three years the girls have done community service including cleaning up a park built for a young lady who lost her battle with cancer. At that time, the girls decided they wanted to raise money for the fight. The charity walk begins at 5 p.m. Participation is $10 per person, $30 per family, or $100 for the Knockout Club (15 bracelets and program recognition). The cancer survivor remembrance ceremony begins at 6 p.m.

Local 3 Cs Memorial Scholarship fundraiser July 12 in South Bend

SOUTH BEND — Hacienda at Erskine Plaza on Miami Road in South Bend has offered to help raise money for the 3 Cs program. From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 12, anyone that takes a coupon in will automatically have 20 percent of their bill given to the 3 Cs. Coupons will be passed out at the Bremen Firemen’s Festival parade and at the fair.

Firemen’s events a real ‘ball’

BREMEN — Fireman Chad Stepp from Tippecanoe, who was participating in the waterball contest at Sunnyside Park Saturday brought along his two-year-old son, Gavyn (who was dressed for the occasion in his own fireman gear) to watch. Stepp said it wasn’t his son’s first waterball contest as spectator; he saw another event two weeks previous.
