‘Annie Get Your Gun’ this weekend at BHS

BREMEN — Bremen High School actors and singers will present “Annie Get Your Gun” Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at the Bowen Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students, $7 for adults and children preschool-age and younger are free.

Bremen champion wrestler honored by town ordinance

BREMEN — One Bremen wrestler got a little more than a handshake for his efforts from his town’s government officials.
Abraham Hall, BHS senior, was honored by official ordinance 2011-3 which recognized him for winning the 74th Annual IHSAA State Wrestling Finals as well as of the Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award after finishing off an unblemished 50-0 season (with the championship) Feb. 18.

Educator learns while teaching at BHS

Term is a learning experience for educator and students
BREMEN — Bremen High School has an educator in its Agricultural Sciences and Business department who is learning at the same time he is teaching the students. Kyle McCallum came on as a student teacher Feb. 6 and will have until May 4 to work closely with veteran Ag leader Chad Berger and thus conclude his teaching education. McCallum grew up in Walkerton, graduated from John Glenn High School in 2008 and studied Agricultural Education at Purdue University. He said he hopes to find a teaching position in northern Indiana.

Local vets team up to start art center

PLYMOUTH — Four local veterans recently founded the Veterans Therapeutic Art Center, Inc. (VTAC) — a non-profit corporation that they hope will bring an opportunity for healing to veterans in a six-county area.
They plan to offer creative opportunities — including wood working, metal sculpting, painting, music, and jewelry making — to veterans and their families free of charge. There’s nothing like this in the area, said group member Larry Balmer, and it’s something that is desperately needed.

Bremen Party Pack liquor license renewed despite last year’s violations

BREMEN — John McKown, owner of Bremen Party Pack, visited the Marshall County Alcoholic Beverage Commission Tuesday about a liquor license renewal.
According to Indiana State excise officer Michelle Traughber, McKown’s application fell under the category of “renewal after violation.”
McKown’s previous violations, from March 2011, included an employee with no permit to serve alcohol and no record of a permit on the owner’s part. Also, McKown did not have a sign displayed indicating that customers must be 18 to purchase cigarettes and that pregnant women should not be smoking.

Class prevents women from being victims

It’s likely you will if live in the area and can attend a self-defense course at Bremen Family Martial Arts. Professional instructors and blackbelts Larry Maxson (fourth degree belt and business owner), Keith Fraine (fourth degree) and Loren Riddle (sixth degree) will offer women the opportunity to empower themselves with the tools they need to keep themselves from being victims, and to keep them safer should they become victims.

Park department invites suggestions

BREMEN — Bremen Parks Department officials held an open meeting March 5 to invite citizens to offer their suggestions for the future plans of the public grounds. Town park superintendent Larry Kipfer said that about 10 percent of Bremenites responded to surveys they received with their utility bills and explained to those gathered at the regular park board meeting that the open hearing was to also collect ideas to allow for input in the department’s five-year plan. “We sent 1,350 surveys out and there were about 143 returned,” he explained.

Cheer team proves friendship gives a winning advantage

BREMEN — Bremen High School’s Cheer Team is proof positive that friendship is an advantage to becoming successful.
Five of them are taking their close friendships and skills all the way to Orlando, Fla. The teens, all but one which are part of the same youth group at Nappanee Missionary Church, are an elite team of athletes (chosen by their 16 fellow cheerleaders) training for the AmeriCheer InterNational Championship to take place March 17 and 18 at Walt Disney World.

Pillows to benefit parents of patients

BREMEN — It’s hard enough to be in the hospital with your child who is sick but the Bremen Kiwanis hope that the pillows they provide will help parents feel a little more comfortable.
Larry Balsley, president-elect and Riley Raffle chairperson for the Bremen Kiwanis said the neck pillow project which the group readily helps with is a branch of Kiwanis’ support to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Trustees decide on Apple

BREMEN — Bremen High School Principal Bruce Jennings commented publicly on the Bremen Board of School Trustee’s decision to accept the recommendation of the Bremen Technology Committee to purchase Apple Computers for the High School One-to-One computing initiative.
“This is going to inspire teachers big time to inspire students,” he said. “My staff is really excited for the prospect of going 1 to 1. The state of Indiana has told us in two years they will expect everyone to have a one to one issue. If that is true, I am glad we are starting now.”
