Birdhouses add flair and ‘green’ to golf course

BREMEN — Birds and Birdies abound at Sprig O’ Green Golf Course in Bremen. Well, birds anyway — birdies depend upon the golfer.

BREMEN — The Lions won’t be sleeping but instead ruling the night at Bowen Auditorium in Bremen.
“The 6th Annual Lion King Contest is sure to provide great entertainment for those who attend,” said Bremen High School Principal, Bruce Jennings. This year’s event is Fri., April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in The Bowen Auditorium. Tickets are $5 at the door, and all proceeds are given to a local non-profit organization chosen by the contestants. 

Top Ten share their most influential people

BREMEN —  Each year, Bremen High School seniors honor their “most influential staff member of their school career” by writing a letter that is delivered to the selected staff member during the final week of March; however, the top ten seniors (academically) have the opportunity to deliver their letter by reading it aloud publicly and ceremoniously.
This traditional Top Ten Senior recognition was held Monday, March 26 in The Bowen Auditorium along with the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony, and the awarding of Honor pins to students by the Bremen Tri Kappa Sorority.

Excel classes start April 26 at BPL

BREMEN — The Bremen Public Library has scheduled a three-week series of classes on Microsoft Excel. The classes will be held Thursday evenings, April 26, May 3 and May 10 .
Each class session will be two hours and build upon the skills presented in the previous class in the series. All classes are held in the library meeting room. These classes will feature the use of Excel version 2010 using the library’s new Windows 7 laptop computers. There is no charge for residents of German Township but registration is required.

Trustees considering funding options

BREMEN — Bremen Schools Board of Trustees has been working with administrators, liaisons, and company representatives to determine the options for funding the One-to-One technology integration initiative for Bremen’s students.
Superintendent Russ Mikel brought some financing options to the board to show trustees what monies might be available to them for purchasing Apple iPads.

IDOE report shows BHS grads’ success

BREMEN — A report produced jointly by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the Indiana Department of Education looking at the success of graduates showed Bremen High School grads as above average in several categories.
The results of that Indiana College Readiness Report gave school officials something to be proud of. High school principal Bruce Jennings offered the study’s three pages of findings to school trustees — which included the following facts:
• 80 percent of BHS graduates sought bachelor’s degrees in 2010 in comparison to the state’s overall percentage of 67

Retired science teacher’s inventions help students learn in different ways

BREMEN — When George Cox, of Bremen, was teaching science to junior and senior high school students, he often felt frustrated that he couldn’t find ways to illustrate concepts to his students. To teach Newton’s first and second laws of motion, Cox used to drop an eight pound shot put and a softball out of an upstairs window at Bremen High School. The idea was to prove that the objects would hit the ground at the same time, even though they were different weights.
“I had to stop doing that, because I was creating (marks) in the lawn,” said Cox. “The school custodian made me stop.”

Students face new calendar, fate of testing results

BREMEN — Bremen third grade students will soon find what their calendar will look like for the upcoming school year and whether or not their classmates will be accompanying them on to the next grade.
