IDOE report shows BHS grads’ success

BREMEN — A report produced jointly by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the Indiana Department of Education looking at the success of graduates showed Bremen High School grads as above average in several categories.
The results of that Indiana College Readiness Report gave school officials something to be proud of. High school principal Bruce Jennings offered the study’s three pages of findings to school trustees — which included the following facts:
• 80 percent of BHS graduates sought bachelor’s degrees in 2010 in comparison to the state’s overall percentage of 67

Retired science teacher’s inventions help students learn in different ways

BREMEN — When George Cox, of Bremen, was teaching science to junior and senior high school students, he often felt frustrated that he couldn’t find ways to illustrate concepts to his students. To teach Newton’s first and second laws of motion, Cox used to drop an eight pound shot put and a softball out of an upstairs window at Bremen High School. The idea was to prove that the objects would hit the ground at the same time, even though they were different weights.
“I had to stop doing that, because I was creating (marks) in the lawn,” said Cox. “The school custodian made me stop.”

Students face new calendar, fate of testing results

BREMEN — Bremen third grade students will soon find what their calendar will look like for the upcoming school year and whether or not their classmates will be accompanying them on to the next grade.

WARSAW — When a young Katie McGowen was in second grade at Bremen Elementary School, she realized she enjoyed writing poems. Her teacher Deb Harrison supported and inspired her and later, as a freshman at Bremen High School, Jamie Smith, even further encouraged McGowen’s passion for literature.
She graduated from BHS in 1999, went on to Purdue University to earn a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 2003, and later became Mrs. Nate Mueller, a housewife and mother of a daughter named Bella (now 7).

BREMEN — Indiana’s Governor Mitch Daniels signed into law, House Enrolled Act. #1196 Thursday, March 15, which immediately made a number of formerly legal substances illegal to possess, transport or sell in the state.

Library offers the latest in technology

eBooks, digital audiobooks now available to BPL patrons
BREMEN — Technology is ever moving forward and in turn, libraries are changing with the times, offering their patrons the very latest conveniences available.
Bremen Public Library has gotten on board recently adding digital audiobooks and eBooks to their collection. Shelli Kauffman, head of Adult Services said the Bremen library administrators are simply attempting to fill a need.

Residents reminded of severe weather warning protocol

BREMEN — The Bremen Police Department reminds the public that with the approach of warmer weather there is an increased potential for severe storms. In the event that a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued for the Bremen area, police and fire personnel will be dispatched to observe for threatening weather conditions. If a tornado or damaging winds are observed in Bremen or surrounding areas the tornado sirens will be activated. Upon hearing the tornado sirens the public is encouraged to seek appropriate shelter immediately if they have not already done so.

‘Annie Get Your Gun’ this weekend at BHS

BREMEN — Bremen High School actors and singers will present “Annie Get Your Gun” Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at the Bowen Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students, $7 for adults and children preschool-age and younger are free.

Bremen champion wrestler honored by town ordinance

March 24, 2012

BREMEN — One Bremen wrestler got a little more than a handshake for his efforts from his town’s government officials.
Abraham Hall, BHS senior, was honored by official ordinance 2011-3 which recognized him for winning the 74th Annual IHSAA State Wrestling Finals as well as of the Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award after finishing off an unblemished 50-0 season (with the championship) Feb. 18.
