Textbook rental fees discussed

BREMEN — Bremen Schools superintendent Russ Mikel presented information to the school board Tuesday evening on textbook rental fees now that the high school is moving to 1:1 computers.
He said that the school is already committed to a four-year contract for textbooks in the amount of $65,000. The board was required to decide whether the school corporation would pay that amount, or if they would pay half and charge parents for the other half over a three-year period in the way of textbook rental fees.

‘Dump Days’ duties

Beginning at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning May 18 about 20 town employees and administrators were on hand to accept loads of trash at the town dump during the annual “Dump Days.” By noon the first day the town’s Director of Operations, Rich Martin said about 75 vehicles had made their way through, relieving their drivers of excess baggage.

The ‘Big Cheese’ is in Bremen

BREMEN — The Big Cheese is in town and no, we’re not talking an important person, but the annual mammoth cheddar that rolls its way into Bremen each year to the Rentown Country Store.
Owner Dennis Hochstetler and his wife Leah bring the annual food and attraction to the store referred to in the area as “The Cheese King of the Midwest.” This year’s mild cheddar from Hennings of Wisconsin beats last year’s at a whopping 2,000 pounds.

Girls basketball camp June 11-13

Bremen Girls Basketball Camp is for students entering grades third through eighth in the fall of 2012. Campers have the opportunity to learn from the Bremen High School coaching staff and players and the camp, held at the BHS gym, will focus on skills: ball handling, passing, shooting and footwork. Participants will also compete in contests and games, to learn while having fun. Dates and times are: Monday, June 11; Tuesday, June 12; and Wednesday, June 13 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for third through sixth graders; 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Dance school students ‘celebrate the date’ with area performances

NAPPANEE — The Lee Anne Stewart Dance Schools’ 39th annual dance production is a celebration of many well-known and not so well-known holidays which commemorate life’s accomplishments and simple pleasures. “Celebrate the Date,” this year’s annual dance production, is the culmination of training and a celebration for the studio’s hard-working dance students.

Depot celebration

Join the celebration of the first anniversary of the opening of the Bremen Depot Sunday, June 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. 
Historic Bremen, Inc. will host an open house that is free to all visitors, and will be providing cookies to those with a sweet tooth. Ancestry class set at Bremen library

Ancestry, the online family history resource featured on the television show “Who Do You Think You Are?” is now available at the Bremen Public Library. A class will be held at the library Thursday, May 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the library meeting room with a brief demonstration of using the program followed by a hands-on session. Experience with using a computer is required to participate in the class session. Patrons who have no computer experience, but wish to learn what Ancestry offers, are welcome to attend the demonstration.

‘Big Top’ coming to Bremen

BREMEN — Grab your families and get ready for fun because the Bremen Boys and Girls Club is bringing in the Big Top as a fundraiser filled with fun and thrills.
Culpepper & Merri-weather Circus is coming to Bremen Sunday, June 3, at Sunnyside Park with two scheduled, 90-minute performances at 2 and 4:30 p.m.
The excitement will be positioned between the new basketball courts and the horseshoe pitches and plenty of parking will be available near the playground, pool, and ball diamonds.
