Shall we dance?- Organizers preparing annual BHS dance marathon to help Riley

BREMEN — Students and school officials are once again getting ready for Bremen High School’s annual dance marathon to benefit Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
“This is a fun way to raise money for a terrific cause,” Melissa Manges, BHS guidance counselor, said in a statement. “We hope that the dance marathon will build a legacy of giving at Bremen High School.”
The dance marathon is 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday, March 16, at the high school. All Marshall County students are invited.

Group of students hope to ‘Touch A Life’

BREMEN — Originally sparked by the plight of child soldiers in Africa, a Bremen High School student organization is giving its time to groups in need.
LaurieAnne Wickens and Stuart Schmeltz, both BHS seniors, started Awakened Compassionate Teens, or ACT, in the spring of their sophomore year.
They said they were inspired to start the club after watching the documentary, “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” in their world history class.
This nonfiction film sheds light on a problem of child soldiers in Uganda, where rebel army groups are known to kidnap children and brainwash them to fight.

Raffle replaces ice fishing event

BREMEN — Poor ice conditions for the second year in a row have forced The Bremen Conservation Club to cancel the annual ice fishing derby.
Instead, the conservation club will have a breakfast buffet and raffle at the VFW/American Legion from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013.
“Disappointed,” Lowell Michaels, with the conservation club, said earlier this week of the this year’s derby cancellation.

Foster to represent Bremen at DYW contest

BREMEN — A Bremen High School senior will represent her hometown during an annual statewide scholarship competition that continues through Saturday.
Haley Foster, the daughter of Christina and Michael Foster, will be among 19 Hoosier high school seniors taking part in the Distinguished Young Women of Indiana scholarship competition in Kokomo, beginning Thursday, Feb. 28.
“I became involved in the DYW program because I feel that it is a great scholarship opportunity to help pay for college,” Foster said via email, “and it is a great way to promote self-confidence in a humble way.”

Anglemyer hires South Bend attorneys

PLYMOUTH — A 21-year-old Wakarusa man charged with attempted murder and kidnapping has hired a pair of South Bend attorneys to defend him.
Chase T. Anglemyer was arraigned in Marshall Superior Court 1 on Friday, Feb. 8, on eight felony counts and a single misdemeanor.
Court officials said Anglemyer hired Andre Gammage and Jason Cichowicz to represent him. Neither attorney could be reached for comment late last week.
Anglemyer could stand trial as early as September, but court officials said his case is likely to be tried in October, depending on court scheduling.

Slabaugh, Lucchese lead Lady Lions in sectional opener
Bremen jumped out to a 17-11 lead at the first quarter break and held off Prairie Heights down the stretch for a 58-53 victory at the Lady Lions’ opener at the Class 2A Central Noble Sectional Tuesday night.
Sara Slabaugh and Ashley Lucchese put up 17 and 16 points, respectively, and Chelsea Huppert finished with eight as the Lions earned back-to-back wins for just the second time this season.

Trojans out-rebound Lions

BOURBON — The Triton Trojans out-rebounded the Bremen Lions 34-19 in a dominating win at the Trojan Trench Thursday night. With 15 of those rebounds coming on the offensive end, the Trojans converted those into 16 second-chance points and won 54-37.  
Bremen coach Ryan Eakins talked about the difference in the game.  

Organizers prepare for Young Authors Conference

BREMEN — Plans are continuing at Bremen Elementary/Middle School for the county-wide Marshall County Reading Council’s Young Authors Conference. 
The conference this year will be Friday evening, April 19, at the host school in Bremen.
Guest author Michelle Houts will be speaking at the conference.
Her first book, “Beef Princess of Practical County,” is set in northern Indiana and is about a young girl who enters her calves in the local county fair – a relevant theme for Marshall County students.

Could milk prices double? Local ag expert, dairy farmer weigh in on ‘dairy cliff’

MARSHALL CO. — Rumors of a $6-8 gallon of milk if a new farm bill isn’t passed this year are probably unfounded, said Purdue Extension Educator Bob Yoder.
“If we do not have a new farm bill, or the present bill isn’t extended
(prices) would revert back to the 1949 initial program — prices established to guarantee profitability in the dairy industry,” said Yoder.

Special visitors made a stop to Bremen Elementary School Friday Dec. 21 to visit staff and students from the Special Education department.
