‘Dig Into Reading’ at Bourbon Public Library

BOURBON — Everyone can “Dig Into Reading” this summer at the Bourbon Public Library. Registration begins May 28 for a summer of fun and prizes.
During June:
‱ Babies birth-2 years old can track reading/activities to be entered into a drawing for grand prizes from Misty Werly Photography, Blessed with Bows, Goodies Galore Cookies and Tupperware. Books read will also count toward the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

KYLA graduates

Several Triton High School students were honored last week at the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy graduation. These students participated in leadership activities with students from other high schools in Kosciusko County. Graduates from Triton are, pictured in no particular order, Ashley Borg, Mikayla Harker, Taylor Hatfield, Dean Howdeshell, Mallorie Jennings, Allie Kann, Benjahmin Perkins, and Holly Stogsdill.

Triton to participate in SFSP

BOURBON — The Triton School Corporation has announced plans to participate in the Summer Food Service Program. Free meals will be made available to all children, 1 to 18 years, and to persons older than 18 years who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled. Free meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Triton DI earns grant

BOURBON — Members of Triton’s Destination ImagiNation team in the Project Outreach Challenge: Reel to Real were recently selected to receive a $2,500 grant from the Marshall County Community Foundation. 
The team, Bourbon Community Awareness, had to define a need within its community, enlist community partners, and document its progress for the Destination ImagiNation program.
This team chose to have a mural painted in town, and sought out a location (Bourbon Subway), obtained permission from the owner, secured a muralist, and has begun to seek funds to complete the project.

Bourbon patrolman’s resignation prompts Town Council discussion

BOURBON — Personnel matters were on the agenda last Tuesday night as the Bourbon Town Council met in regular session.
The Council accepted the resignation of police patrolman Ben McIntyre, who is moving to the Plymouth Police Department. Discussion ensued about his replacement and whether to hire a full-time officer or retain a four-person force and supplement with part-time officers. The issues involve budgeting for benefits on the one hand and scheduling complications on the other. The matter was tabled to be taken under advisement.

Two teaching positions cut

BOURBON — The Triton School Board took definitive action to solve the budget shortfall at its regular meeting Monday night. As a result, two full-time teaching positions will be eliminated this fall.
Superintendent Donna Burroughs, presenting the report of the Finance Committee, which also reflected her own recommendations, detailed four main actions which were approved unanimously by the five-member board.
According to Burroughs, though, no teachers will actually be cut.

BPL celebrating National Library Week April 14-19

BOURBON — The Bourbon Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by offering a weeklong book sale ($1 for one bag), daily drawings for kids, a family movie night Tuesday, April 16 at 6 p.m., a special story time for preschoolers from 2-2:45 p.m. with local EMS and K9 units, and a family game day Saturday, April 20 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. (bring your own board/card game or play one that the library already has).

Clause from 1892 causing issues for church interested in selling property

BOURBON — A local church is looking at selling property it uses infrequently to an individual wanting to open a wedding chapel in Bourbon.
Brent Leichty, pastor of New Wine Church in Bourbon, visited the Marshall County commissioners meeting Monday to ask them how to proceed in a somewhat unusual situation.
The deed for the parcel that the church sits on includes wording that indicates the property must be used for “church purposes only.” If the property is used for anything other than church purposes, its ownership will revert to Marshall County.

Triton STARS immersed in colonial America

BOURBON — “Total immersion in a bygone culture is a good way to learn to read.” So says Mrs. Susie Mullin, who teaches fifth grade STARS at Triton Elementary School. As the teacher responsible for the social studies area, she uses the immersion technique to create a vital interest in reading.
