Bourbon approves plan to hire fifth police officer

BOURBON — An ongoing issue of police staffing was settled last Tuesday at the regular meeting of the Bourbon Town Council. A recent resignation had prompted a consideration of whether or not to replace the full-time officer in the five-person department.

Triton school board reviewing athlete disciplinary policy

BOURBON — A rare insight into the workings of a school board was offered last Tuesday morning as the Triton School Board met in a public work session. Patrons who think the board is only concerned with legal liability issues for the corporation are mistaken as this Board is clearly concerned with the wellbeing of Triton students.

Riffle, Chupp tops in THS class of ‘13

BOURBON — Daniel Riffle III has been named the valedictorian for the class of 2013 at Triton Jr.-Sr. High School, with Adrian Chupp earning the honor of salutatorian.
Riffle achieved the All-A Honor Roll each grading period throughout high school. This year he was presented an academic gold medallion and an engraved watch at the academic awards banquet for reaching the highest level of academic points at Triton. The math department selected him as one of two top students for his four years of achievement.

Welcome to ‘Kyle’s Koncessions’

BOURBON — Tears flowed and memories abounded as family and friends gathered Wednesday to memorialize Kyle Pugh of Bourbon at the dedication of newly-completed “Kyle’s Koncessions” at the Little League/Softball fields. Kyle was a Triton Elementary School student who died on July 26, 2011 in a go-cart accident at the farm owned by his parents, Wesley and Alissa Pugh.

Triton school board looks at transportation dept. changes

BOURBON — The Triton School Board and patrons alike were gratified to see four STARS students present the book they had written for publication. First- and second-graders Angelica Sarabia, Dena Slabaugh, Jordan Kaufman, and Serena Schwartz, representing STARS students, showed their book, “Three Mice and a Cat,” and read prepared explanations during the regular board meeting last Monday.

‘Dig Into Reading’ at Bourbon Public Library

BOURBON — Everyone can “Dig Into Reading” this summer at the Bourbon Public Library. Registration begins May 28 for a summer of fun and prizes.
During June:
• Babies birth-2 years old can track reading/activities to be entered into a drawing for grand prizes from Misty Werly Photography, Blessed with Bows, Goodies Galore Cookies and Tupperware. Books read will also count toward the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

KYLA graduates

Several Triton High School students were honored last week at the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy graduation. These students participated in leadership activities with students from other high schools in Kosciusko County. Graduates from Triton are, pictured in no particular order, Ashley Borg, Mikayla Harker, Taylor Hatfield, Dean Howdeshell, Mallorie Jennings, Allie Kann, Benjahmin Perkins, and Holly Stogsdill.

Triton to participate in SFSP

BOURBON — The Triton School Corporation has announced plans to participate in the Summer Food Service Program. Free meals will be made available to all children, 1 to 18 years, and to persons older than 18 years who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled. Free meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Triton DI earns grant

April 26, 2013

BOURBON — Members of Triton’s Destination ImagiNation team in the Project Outreach Challenge: Reel to Real were recently selected to receive a $2,500 grant from the Marshall County Community Foundation. 
The team, Bourbon Community Awareness, had to define a need within its community, enlist community partners, and document its progress for the Destination ImagiNation program.
This team chose to have a mural painted in town, and sought out a location (Bourbon Subway), obtained permission from the owner, secured a muralist, and has begun to seek funds to complete the project.
