Community Day succeeds

BOURBON — A nasty morning did not dampen bright spirits last Saturday as volunteers gathered for the first Bourbon town clean-up/fix-up.
The well-organized event was initiated by the town council to continue the image of an effectively-run small town in Midwest America.

Argos, Triton two of the ‘Best’

BOURBON — After being recognized by U.S. News and World Report as two of the “Best High Schools 2012,” Argos Jr.-Sr. High School and Triton Jr.-Sr. High School prove that good things really do come in small packages.
Triton has an enrollment of 508 students with 27 teachers while Argos has 305 students and 20 teachers.

Triton Elementary wraps up year’s music programs

BOURBON — The auditorium was packed for the final Triton Elementary School music program of the year last Tuesday. The kindergarten and first-grade classes presented their version of a zoo theme directed by music teacher Mollie Kintzel.

Triton DI teams win at state competition

BOURBON — The Triton Destination ImagiNation teams represented the schools well at the state tournament April 21. The high school team named “Insert Name Here” competing in the “News To Me” improv challenge placed third in the state. The team members of Zach Wampler, Jannick Mathiesen, Adrian Chupp, Isabell Yazel, Nick Damron, Nate Spangle and Chance Pflueger performed an improv skit-based on a current newspaper article and a headline.

Projects reviewed by town council

BOURBON — Bourbon’s town council reviewed the progress of two of its current projects: the storm drain project and the lift station project, at Tuesday’s meeting.
In his statement on the progress of the storm drain project, Don Bixby said that the work “is doing great.” The only likely problem he foresees is with the soil.
“It just doesn’t stand up at all,” he said. “You cut a trench in that stuff and it just caves in. Worst dirt I’ve ever seen in my life, unfortunately.”

Coaches hired at board meeting

BOURBON — In a meeting of the Triton school board Monday, the board voted unanimously to make several changes to the school program — changes that involve new employees, the academic calendar, and cafeteria meal prices. They also heard reports on various school matters.
The school board voted unanimously to hire Thomas Cody as the boys/girls assistant track coach for the 2011-12 school season. They also voted to employ Brad Hargrave as the 13- to 15-year-old baseball coach and volunteer assistant coach for JV baseball for the 2011-12 school season.

TSC announces Summer Food Service Program participation

BOURBON — The Triton School Corporation recently announced plans to participate in the Summer Food Service Program.
Free meals will be made available to all children, 1 to 18 years, and to persons older than 18 who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled.

Triton students re-enact 18th century lifestyles

BOURBON — Interest surged last Friday as STAR students at Triton Elementary School roared back into history. Proudly hosting their Revolutionary War environment, the fifth and sixth grade STARS (Students and Teachers Achieving Reading Success) explained their creations to most of the students and staff in the school. A “celebration” was the order of the day. What was being celebrated? — the end of the Revolutionary War, of course!

20 inducted to Triton NHS

BOURBON — At 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, Triton Jr.-Sr. High School held its annual National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony. After a brief slideshow of the inductees, Principal Mike Chobanov welcomed the audience to the proceedings, which took place in the school’s auditorium.
Once current members had taken their seats on stage, the student board members of the NHS began to enumerate the qualities that NHS members emanate: character, scholarship, leadership and service.

Marquette boys basketball coach praises Triton community

BOURBON — It was high praise for Triton Jr.-Sr. High School Tuesday night as the Triton School Board met in regular session. Superintendent Carl Hilling shared a letter head basketball coach Jason Groves had received from his counterpart at Marquette Catholic High School.
“I first want to congratulate you on a great victory,” said Donovan Garletts, head boys basketball coach at the Michigan City school following its sectional defeat by Triton. “Your boys showed amazing resilience and I’m pretty sure we made it fun for the crowd,” he continued.
