BOURBON — Parents and community members spoke out freely as they questioned Triton Superintendent Donna Burroughs on the “balanced calendar” concept at last Monday’s school board meeting. The community had been invited to the meeting as one of several info-sessions being held in Marshall and surrounding counties on the proposed model. Burroughs, a leading expert on this concept, had prepared a hypothetical balanced calendar for Triton next school year which was duplicated and disseminated at all regional info-sessions.

‘One child, one hour, and one school’

March 16, 2014

BOURBON — “Hope secretly feeds and strengthens promise,” wrote Sri Chinmoy in a Vatican prayer in 2003. It is impossible to know what is in a child’s mind as she eagerly anticipates the upcoming meeting with her mentor. Mentors, teachers, and parents have some inkling, however, as the child’s attitude, behavior, and performance in school improve dramatically. Such is the overall experience at Triton Elementary School as it begins a mentoring program devised by Kids Hope USA.

Council rewards shoveling family

February 20, 2014

BOURBON — Good deeds frequently go unnoticed. One such deed, however, was recognized by the Bourbon Town Council at its regular meeting Tuesday evening. It was reported that resident Ben Middaugh and his son McLain had been seen shoveling around fire hydrants in Bourbon following the recent heavy snows. This clearing of the hydrants is a safety issue since fire personnel can waste considerable time in an emergency trying to locate their hose hookups.

BOURBON — “The night came alive Saturday,” according to Kathryn Chapman Dreibelbis, coordinator of the annual Triton Father/Daughter Dance. Held at the Matchett Center in Bourbon, the event was open to any girl living in the Triton School District.
The cold and wet weather did not keep the girls and their dads from coming and enjoying themselves. The girls were dressed in semi-formal attire, which allowed their dress fabric to twirl and flow to the music of disk jockey Greg Craft. The fathers seemed to enjoy this special time with their children.
