Board proceeds with bond sales for 2 projects

BOURBON — Following a public meeting Monday night, the Triton School board voted unanimously to proceed with bond sales for two renovation projects.
The estimated combined costs for the projects total $3,946,537. Funding for the projects that are aimed at increased energy conservation will come from a Qualified School Construction Bond and a Tax Exempt Bond.
Presenting the particulars of the projects and the cost breakdown at the Nov. 8 meeting was Sonny Wyland, attorney; Curt Pletcher, Umbaugh & Associates; and Tim Pitts, EMCOR.

Annual Lions’ party has many winners

BOURBON — The annual Halloween party hosted by the Bourbon Lions Club was also a success Saturday night with costumed residents of all sizes competing in games and contests.

Bates legacy continues to grow

BOURBON — The Bates Corporation celebrated its growth last Thursday with a ceremony announcing the completion of its new, approximately 18,000 square-foot warehouse facility. The project, handled by McCollough Scholten Construction, Inc., Elkhart, began Aug. 1.

Rate increase fully approved

ETNA GREEN — Eric Walsh and Matt Sowers, Umbaugh and Associates, Plymouth, were present at the October town council meeting held at the Heritage Park building. Following the pledge to the American flag, time was allowed for a brief period to go over the proposals and reasonings discussed at recent meetings. It was outlined since the last rate increase in the electric rates was in 2004, the capital improvements are not meeting the needs. According to the tracking records, the time has come to pass some costs on to the residents.

Two running for Bourbon Town Council seat

BOURBON — Two locals are running in the Nov. 2 election for the Bourbon Town Council seat to be vacated by member Tim Perkins in January. Ellen Elliott will run on the Democratic ballot and her opponent, Les McFarland, was voted in as the person to be named on the ballot during a Republican convention in August, versus fellow Republican constituents Bill Keyser and Angel Perkins.

Seven running for three seats

BOURBON — Seven area residents are running for three township positions on the Triton School Board for seats to be filled in January.
The candidates were introduced to the community for a question-and-answer forum at the Triton High School auditorium Oct. 21.
Louise Mason facilitated the event such as she did four years ago for a previous school board election.
Only a small audience showed up to hear the six candidates that attended (Joseph Choquette, running for the Bourbon Township seat was not present).

Triton Elem. VIP Day a success

BOURBON — Friday, Oct., 1 Triton Elementary School continued its annual “VIP Day” tradition. Formerly known as “Grandparents Day,” Triton Elementary opened it’s doors to the community for those “Very Important Persons” to join their special students throughout the school day. VIPs had the opportunity to visit the students’ classrooms as well as attend lunch and recess with the students. Many classrooms had planned special activities including: games involving VIPs, student presentations, and recitation of recently-studied topics.

Generosity of donors provides hope for the future

New endowment funds are set to help Marshall County residents with meeting the costs of higher education and enhancing the quality of life. All of the funds were recently accepted by the board of directors at the Marshall County Community Foundation.
The Triton Jr.-Sr. High School Fund is a non-permanent fund that benefits Triton Jr.-Sr. High School. The fund will be used to further the educational purposes of the school as may be needed in the future.

Triton holds open meeting for project

BOURBON — The Triton School Board held a special session last Thursday to allow the public to receive information on two proposed projects for the school corporation as well as hear how the funding for the projects has been established.
However, only one patron attended the entire meeting and only one other attended for a few minutes.
The majority of the projects concern heating and cooling unit replacements along with controls.

Rate hike expected; hearing Oct. 12

ETNA GREEN — Eric Walsh and Matt Sowers, Umbaugh and Associates, Plymouth noted a two percent increase on the electronic rates for Etna Green beginning January 1, 2011 and again for January 1, 2012. An average usage resident would see about a $2.22 increase. A six percent increase for the water rate will start January 1, 2011 and January 1, 2012 would also be about an increase of $2.
