Trains celebrated at museum

PLYMOUTH — A special running of the 8-by-40 model train set housed at the Marshall County Museum Wednesday attracted more than 200 visitors, according to Museum Director Linda Rippy.
Within the first 15 minutes the display was opened, there had already been 50 visitors.
Rippy said the display can only be opened when there are enough volunteers.

Council says goodbye, wraps business up

BOURBON — The Bourbon Town Council wrapped up some general business and said goodbye to member Tim Perkins at the conclusion of the last meeting of the year, during this, Perkins’ final meeting in the seat.
He will be replaced by Les McFarland at the January council meeting scheduled for Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.

Winning artist chosen at 2011-12 Upland Game Bird Stamp judging event

ETNA GREEN — Jeffrey Kleinefelter of Etna Green, has won California’s 2011-12 California Upland Game Bird Stamp art competition. His rendition of a wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo, Rio Grande sub-species in gouache will be reproduced on the 2011-12 California Upland Game Bird Stamp and will be available as collectible limited edition prints.

Mostly kudos at end-of-the-year meeting

BOURBON — Triton School Corporation’s Superintendent Carl Hilling had mostly kudos to give and good things to share at the December school board meeting — that is, until the subject of school funding came up.

Local canine stars in area play

BOURBON — When Julie Boardman’s sister suggested to Julie that she have her dog try out for a part in a play, Boardman laughed. She laughed because, according to her, “Madison would have flunked dog obedience school.”
Madison, Boardman’s 10-year-old, male, cocker spaniel mix, beat out five other dogs to win the part of Sandy in the musical “Annie.”

Local authors sign books

PLYMOUTH — Saturday, the Marshall County Historical Museum sponsored a book signing for three authors with roots in Marshall County.
The event took place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each author hosted a table with their books on sale as fans had the opportunity to chat with the authors while getting their book signed. Authors were Amy Wenger, Jan Shupert-Arick and William Erwin.

Schools required to have class take ISTEP online

INDIANAPOLIS — A decision made by the Indiana State Board of Education in August has the DOE (Department of Education) evaluating the readiness of Indiana schools to administer the multiple-choice portion of the ISTEP+ assessments test electronically.
The DOE is requiring schools to have at least one grade level in each school building with grades 3-8 take that portion of the test online.
Only the multiple-choice portion is offered online; all students will take the applied skills portion of the test on paper.

Bates is 2010 memorial friend winner

PLYMOUTH — Kim Bates of Bourbon is the 2010 winner of the Joe Gingerich Memorial Friend of Extension award. 
The award, sponsored by Centier Bank was presented by Donna Pontius at the annual Extension meeting held Nov. 16.
Nominated by both the Marshall County 4-H Council and Fair Board, Kim has logged 15 years as a leader in Bourbon Township, served five years on the 4-H Council as vice president, president and past president.  While on the 4-H council, Kim served on several committees including the audit and budget committee and still helps with club audits.  

KEDO rep speaks to council

ETNA GREEN — After the Etna Green Town Council gave the pledge to the American flag, president Todd Slabaugh introduced George Robertson, executive director of the Kosciusko Economic Development Organization. Robertson stated that the organization was a resource for the town and the county as it will provide marketing material in hopes of attracting businesses that can provide good paying jobs.

McFarland offers gratitude to supporters

BOURBON — Les McFarland holds several titles in the Bourbon community, among them, father, husband, business owner, Marshall County and Bourbon Police Officer, but come January, he will add Bourbon Town Councilman to that list.
The night of Nov. 2, many candidates were sweating it out awaiting results of voters but not McFarland. “I was on duty,” he said. “ I was trying to listen on the radio (for area results) but I was busy taking calls and so I didn’t officially find out until the next day.”
