Miles wins Miss Valentine 2011

\BOURBON — Hannah Miles is the most recent lucky little girl to be dubbed “Miss Valentine” at a “Apple of My Eye Daddy-Daughter Dance.”
The 8-year-old is the daughter of Thomas and Tracie Miles, Bourbon. She said she was hoping she would be called upon to carry the title revered in the little girl circuit in the Triton school district, and that she also hoped everyone there Saturday evening “would have a good time.”

Triton Hall of Fame kick-off, banquet Feb. 18-19

BOURBON — The Triton High School Athletic Department has now created the Triton Athletic Hall of Fame.
What began as a vision by Triton Athletic Director Mason McIntyre will come to fruition during the Hall of Fame weekend Feb. 18 and 19.
“Being a Trojan myself, I know and understand the importance of recognizing the many athletes who have paved the way for our department,” McIntyre stated. “It is because of these great coaches, athletes and contributors that the Triton Athletic Department has been so successful over the years. It is time to give credit where credit is due.”

Bill may require school to start after Labor Day

PLYMOUTH — Indiana public schools could be updating calendars for the 2013-14 school year if a bill introduced into the Indiana State Senate Jan. 5 continues to be met with approval.
Senate Bill 0171, concerning restricting start and end dates for school calendars, was introduced on first reading Jan. 5, 2011 and was then referred to the Committee on Education and Career Development.
Originally authoring the bill were Dennis Kruse, District 16; Mike Delph, District 29, and Scott Schneider, District 30.
On Jan. 13, Frank Mrvan, District 1, signed on as co-author.

Board organizes, hears rates

BOURBON — The Triton School Board held a reorganization meeting Jan. 10. The oath of office was extended to Jerilyn Anders and Debbie Shively, both returning to the board after being reelected, and Terri Barnhart, who joined the board for a first term.
Election of officers confirmed Dick Trowbridge, president; Amy Middaugh, vice-president; and Debbie Shively, secretary. Trowbridge was also named president of the Board of Finance and Shively will serve as Finance Board secretary.
Meeting times will continue to be on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the central office.

New year, new member, same issues

BOURBON — The Bourbon Town Council convened for the first time in 2011 beginning a new year with a new member, Les McFarland.
McFarland was sworn in Thursday, Dec. 23, at 10 a.m., at the town hall by Bourbon Town Clerk Kimberly Berger, to begin his four-year term Jan. 1.
And though new to the position as council member, councilman Gary Collins nominated him as president as the first item of business. Incumbent councilmember Larry Wattenbarger expressed his disapproval after the motion was seconded by McFarland.

Triton AD presents report, explains IMPACT

BOURBON — The Triton School Board heard the annual report on Triton athletics from Mason McIntyre, director of athletics, during their first meeting of 2011. McIntyre began his remarks saying that he added a phrase to the Vision and Mission Statement. The addition reads: The Trojan Way: 15 Sports, ONE team.
McIntyre said 15 years ago, Triton had 13 varsity sports and now they have 15. He also explained those 15 years ago, coaches served as trainers with very little supplies. Now, the school has full-time certified athletic trainer on site with needed supplies.

Giving tickets made easier for law enforcement

BOURBON — Police officers from the Bourbon and Plymouth Departments will soon be able to begin using the Indiana Supreme Court’s electronic Citation and Warning System (eCWS). Instead of writing tickets, officers use a hand-held scanner to read bar codes on a drivers’ license and registration. The information on the license and /or registration is automatically entered on the ticket form.

3.8 Earthquake shakes Indiana up

GREENTOWN — At 7:55 Thurs-day morning many Hoosiers — including a few Plymouth residents — felt the earth move.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an earthquake initially estimated at a magnitude of 4.2 struck north-central Indiana. USGS later revised its estimate to 3.8. The quake struck just before 8 a.m. and was 3 miles deep, according to the USGS.
The epicenter was located about near Greentown, 15 miles east-southeast of Kokomo, 15 miles west-southwest from Marion and 50 miles north of Indianapolis.

Trains celebrated at museum

PLYMOUTH — A special running of the 8-by-40 model train set housed at the Marshall County Museum Wednesday attracted more than 200 visitors, according to Museum Director Linda Rippy.
Within the first 15 minutes the display was opened, there had already been 50 visitors.
Rippy said the display can only be opened when there are enough volunteers.
