Triton cuts ribbon on Ernie Watkins Pavilion

BOURBON — If fame is defined as “how your luster lasts over the decades,” then 90-year-old Ernie Watkins is as bright and shining as the sun. The well-known Bourbon area resident was honored June 11 as the brand new Triton Jr./Sr. High School pavilion was named in his honor.

Triton High School held its academic awards banquet at Christos’ Banquet Center Friday evening, May 18.

All-A Honor Roll awards were presented to students who made the All-A Honor Roll for all grading periods during the 2011-12 year.

Triton class of ’12 leaves legacy of learning

BOURBON — “Never forget — you are educating students,” a college professor told Triton School Superintendent Carl Hilling. “I have always made that my priority,” said Hilling, as he praised Triton’s 2012 graduating class Sunday at the high school gymnasium.
According to Hilling, this year, the high school:
• Was recognized nationally in “U.S. News and World Report” for preparing students for college and other career avenues; and

Nordmann, Fisher tops in THS class of ’12

BOURBON — Nicholas Nordmann has been named the valedictorian for the class of 2012 at Triton Jr.-Sr. High School, with Tayler Fisher recognized as salutatorian.
Nordmann achieved the All-A Honor Roll each grading period this year, as well as being selected as this year’s top student in the mathematics and science departments. He was presented an engraved pocket watch at the academic awards banquet for reaching the top level of academic points at Triton.

Burroughs is new superintendent for Triton schools

BOURBON —At Triton’s monthly school board meeting Monday, the red carpet of recognition and welcome was rolled out. During the meeting, two community girls were honored for a heroic act, Triton’s winning Destination Imagination Team was congratulated, and Donna Burroughs was confirmed in her position as new school superintendent.

BOURBON — A nasty morning did not dampen bright spirits last Saturday as volunteers gathered for the first Bourbon town clean-up/fix-up.
The well-organized event was initiated by the town council to continue the image of an effectively-run small town in Midwest America.

Argos, Triton two of the ‘Best’

BOURBON — After being recognized by U.S. News and World Report as two of the “Best High Schools 2012,” Argos Jr.-Sr. High School and Triton Jr.-Sr. High School prove that good things really do come in small packages.
Triton has an enrollment of 508 students with 27 teachers while Argos has 305 students and 20 teachers.

Triton Elementary wraps up year’s music programs

BOURBON — The auditorium was packed for the final Triton Elementary School music program of the year last Tuesday. The kindergarten and first-grade classes presented their version of a zoo theme directed by music teacher Mollie Kintzel.

Triton DI teams win at state competition

BOURBON — The Triton Destination ImagiNation teams represented the schools well at the state tournament April 21. The high school team named “Insert Name Here” competing in the “News To Me” improv challenge placed third in the state. The team members of Zach Wampler, Jannick Mathiesen, Adrian Chupp, Isabell Yazel, Nick Damron, Nate Spangle and Chance Pflueger performed an improv skit-based on a current newspaper article and a headline.

Projects reviewed by town council

BOURBON — Bourbon’s town council reviewed the progress of two of its current projects: the storm drain project and the lift station project, at Tuesday’s meeting.
In his statement on the progress of the storm drain project, Don Bixby said that the work “is doing great.” The only likely problem he foresees is with the soil.
“It just doesn’t stand up at all,” he said. “You cut a trench in that stuff and it just caves in. Worst dirt I’ve ever seen in my life, unfortunately.”
